Spirit Joy

It was a long, LONG day! But I am so proud of how well Spirit Joy handled the trip and the full day of excitement! Especially because there wasn't anywhere to crate her during the day to give her a little down time. She did take a few naps on the bleachers by my feet or on my lap. But she seemed excited to watch the agility and we had so much fun watching our friends shine in the ring. I'm just so proud of how she is able to handle so much stimulation and strange dogs (not necessarily well behaved dogs), strange sounds, strange smells, etc. She just has this rock solid temperament and confidence. I don't know how I got so lucky with this little girl.

Sounds like you have a great girl there! Glad you all had a good day!

Poor little Spirit Joy got sick this afternoon. She had a play date at the lake for one of her friend's birthdays, and on the car ride home she threw up in the car. And immediately proceeded to eat the vomit before I could pull the car over (yet another reason to use a crate in the car - the vomit was contained inside the crate and easy to clean up). Once home, she continued vomiting as often as every couple of minutes. I took her to the emergency vet and they think she just got into something she shouldn't have, so they gave her cerenia, reglan, pepcid, and subq fluids. She can't have anything to drink until the morning and no food until tomorrow night. Poor little puppy :-(

Update on Spirit. She started throwing up again this evening at 9:30. I took her back to the emergency vet and they thought she might have a GI obstruction that would require surgery. They gave her barium and observed her for a few hours and it turned out that the mass was just her undigested breakfast (which she threw up and then reswallowed at about 1:30 this afternoon) and was moving along fine. They are keeping her the rest of the night for additional fluids and nausea medications but she should be fine and can home in the morning. Thank goodness for health insurance!!!!!! So far, in her entire life, I've paid about $275 towards her policy, and tonight I got $1000 in benefits.

Thanks for checking on her, Lanie. She still had a cough this morning (which the emergency vet thought was probably just from vomiting so much but wasn't 100% certain). She did not have a fever and all bloodwork was normal. So she went to her regular vet this morning and I just brought her home. Except for the cough she seems fine. They put her on an antibiotic in case she aspirated a little bit of vomit into her lungs, and they left her IV in - if she's still ok tomorrow I'll bring her back and they'll remove it. She's sleeping here next to me right now.

Poor puppy is still coughing but otherwise acting perfectly fine. I guess we'll just need to give her a little time. She's on an antibiotic just in case.

Spirit was coughing a lot overnight, so I took her back to the vet this morning (she needed to have her IV removed anyway). Once she got up and started moving around the cough almost disappeared. The vet checked her lungs and they're clear. She seems much better today. She'll go back to flyball and agility next week.
