Spitfire is not doing well

I blame Ian (and my worrying). His limp is getting a little better but he is still worse than any before. I moved his bowl of the ceramic tile on to carpet so he has more grip. I have had to tell Ian stop as he wants to play. Still not anywhere near before and I have to lift him over the door sill but I am 'less' worried. Thanks for the input, and he is still an old man and I will still worry a LOT.
 
Please check the paw fur (if not trimmed regularly it can make floors slippery, and that can lead to other bad things).
I have so many cheap throw rugs from WalMart I bought to help Gavin with my tile and wood floors, too.
And I did move to booties as things progressed.

Glad things seem to be progressing in a positive manner....
 
Sorry to hear this. The dementia/stroke thing is hard to watch--just as it is with a person. I hope you can get him in and he can get some meds to help. I always keep metacam on hand for sudden injuries pain management. but he may need something a bit stronger at his age...
Having just gone down this road I feel for ya.
 
More and more I think he just got hurt bad and does not crash as well. I think he was in a lot of pain. His limp is almost gone and so is his stumbling. Still sleeping a LOT and you can see he is cautious of moving. So I am letting him rest as much as I can. See what the vet says tomorrow.
 
So vet says no stroke but maybe some dementia. Heart is good but he also noticed how tight his back legs were. Overall he agreed he likely hurt himself and was in pain. Got Carprofen and Gabapentin for him and the vet said he might need to stay on it but that was up to me. Also while I can see the dementia thing it was so sudden. So if that contributed I think it was some there but the pain kicked it in harder. He got his first drugs and I will monitor him. Right now he is sleeping in front of his fan so maybe the drugs are taking effect some. Overall no bad news other than yes he is an old Sheltie. Oh and we weighed him. Diet starts now, he needs to drop at least 2 pounds and 3 would be better. That should help his over all health also.
 
Thanks for the update Sheep, I’m glad the vet didn’t feel it was a stroke!
I know when Piper hurts himself he is very cautious in his movements, plus Spitfire has several years on him so I imagine it’s even worse. I’m sure the medication will help loosen those old muscles!
I’m glad you’re not going on your trip…I wouldn’t be able to leave my dogs if one of them wasn’t doing well! All I’d do is worry!
