Stages of coat growth

Can I handle more to come? lol. I swear he looks like he did about a year ago. Weird.

Handsome? All the flying hair and all? He's so scraggly looking and so unkempt. But yet, even when I brush him, he looks like this. LOL. Poor guy. Hopefully he'll get his coat so he can be even more handsome.

BTW, I like him this way though, to me, he still looks like a puppy. And his butt isn't so fluffy.

of course, he's handsome- he is a sheltie ;)
yes, fluffy butt is a serious situation. I am so glad that Callie lets me brush her or her butt would get out of control. I'll have to try for another babybutt shot so we can see how Cranberry is doing in that area

I dont know much about coats or how long it takes but i do know your furry friend is gorgeous!!!!!!!!!

:) Thanks. He says, "I know I am". LOL.

BTW, I just looked at the photo in my profile of Miko and Koji lying next to each other, and others, they look the same. Maybe this IS his coat.

I'm always so amazed at how they change so much over the first few years.

I still learning about this coat thing. Ember will be 5 in May and I was grooming her the other day and for the first time ever, thought her pants were totally out of control. Where did all that undercoat come from?:smile2: She is still getting fluffier.

What do you guys think of Koji's coat? He'll be 3 on May 19. To me, it looks like the first adult coat still. Miko was way fuller by this point. I'm assuming he's just matures slower? We know his puppyhood has lasted a LOT longer than Miko's.

Thoughts?

His guard hair is growing out nicely, but you right, he does not have alot of undercoat. A little shaping with scissors would even him out a little.

How tall is he? How much does he weigh? I'm used to my fat boys. Koji looks very slim for his age.

p.s. He's got a lovely face! Very expressive!

It might just be his line. Tully has a pretty strangly coat (not a lot of undercoat). I know she is female but I've seen more undercoat on other females. And I know of a female sheltie with virtually no undercoat. I'm assuming by 3 thats about the limit of the undercoat (I'm hoping anyway, if Deska gets a bigger undercoat this winter he is going to look like a sheep).

I'm so afraid to trim his hair right now. I know in this stage, I butchered poor Miko. Koji is about 17.5" tall and weighs 24.5lbs. He is slim, and hopefully will stay slim. Miko is chubby, so I'm used to that too (he's 15.5" and 23lbs).

I would still be inclined to trim him a little - his feet, his legs, the stifle, the skirt, the ears. Just a little to tidy him up abit.

If you can get you hands on The Illustrated Guide to Sheltie Grooming, its a good start, although the pictures are illustrations not photographs, so its often difficult to understand what they are going for.

There is a video you can buy for about $25 from Silver Trails Sheltie that helps to de-mystify it about as well.

There are "short-cut" tricks to trimming that you can do for a non-show dog which I won't go into here, but if you are interested, PM me.

For example: Anna (who we haven't heard from for ages, btw) sent a video clip on how to trim ears using thinning shears. Fast and easy.
