Starting Clicker training tomorrow!

I have been doing clicker training with Sammy since she was 8 weeks old, now she is 5 months, I'd say it has worked pretty well for us.

One tips I want to share is that, no matter what you're trying to teach, you need to find a way to make the dog do that behaviour on her own, then you can do the click and treat.

Here are a few tricks that I taught Sammy, I started filming right from the start when she had no experience with what I am trying to teach, so you can see the failure and frustration at the beginning, lol.

The "shame" trick, I called it cover (her nose).

AWWW, Sammy is SO adorable & a great learner! I'm planning on teaching Nicky all those tricks! I've been working on "leave it" (which he is great with now) but the hard part is, getting the eye contact at the same time. I got some sort-of glances in our training session tonight, so progress I guess? LOL. "Bow" is gonna be our next trick to learn!

Also, I'm going to introduce play tomorrow as an alternate reward. I think this will work out well because he loves to play. I'm going to be working with him a lot this summer, but I don't want him to get fat either. Just starting the clicker training, I've given him way too many treats already.

Emily, for most of the training I am doing with Sammy I am alternating between 2 types of kibble as treat. Her regular "meal" kibble - Acana Puppy Formula, and Acana Puppy Small Breed. This is way cheaper than buying special "treat", I think they have worked just as well.

Sometimes, she even has to "earn" her meal, 1 kibble at a time.

That's a great idea! I'm not sure my dog would work for his regular kibble, but I got some different kibble that he hasn't had before, they're smaller pieces & he doesn't understand they're not actually treats. So, those have been working out :)

That's great, keep up the good work. I use the tiniest pieces of cheese, sometimes mixed with little pieces of grain free cat food, dried liver or I make home made tuna or tripe fudge, etc etc
Mixing it up, and the newer the trick the juicer the rewards ;)

Just an update on how our training is going so far: I've really been getting the hang of the clicker! Since starting clicker training, I've taught him 2 new tricks as well as perfecting all his other tricks. I taught him "Take a bow" which he does on command now & I've taught him to close a door with his nose
I taught him to target a sticky note w/ his nose & then, brought it closer to the door, eventually on the door. Then began rewarding him for touching the door w/ his nose. Then I'd reward him for even the smallest movements of the door & eventually only reward him for pushing it all the way closed. I was impressed w/ how fast he caught on! Been working on this for 2-3 weeks and as of our last training session, he'll push the door all the way closed and doesn't need the sticky note anymore. Yay! So proud :)

That's great news Emily! Can't wait to hear what he learns next!
Thanks!!! I'm already thinking of what trick to teach him next, so many choices! right now, I'm spending some time generalizing the 'door' trick w/ the different doors around the house. He's learned the trick w/ my bedroom door, so I went back a few steps for a different door and he seemed to catch on really quick! This is fun :biggrin2:

Fantastic training! Such a happy puppy! If I may suggest Bob´s Bailey famous ¨click for action, reward for position¨ to help with efficiency. Placement of the reward is just as important as reward itself.
