Still Not Better

Panacur(fenbenazole) is my dewormer of choice. It has action against all major intestinal parasites and giardia. Very safe, I routinely deworm my dogs every 6 months with it as they go to shows, training classes and parks. All the high risk areas. Plus Drontal Plus costs a fortune and Panacur is very cost friendly.

I tend to lean towards giving her a dewormer as well.

When my goats have worms, they get a yellow slimy "binder" to the pellets. That is my hint that I need to worm!

Just got back from the vet. They didn't tell me that Bailey couldn't have food for 12 hours before the test. Good thing she didn't eat dinner before we went, so we only had to wait an hour.

I spoke to the vet briefly. She said the malnutrition panel tests pancreas enzymes (not pancreatitis). It's tests B12 levels. She said many dogs with chronic diarrhea have low B12 and need to get B12 shots. It also tests for bacteria overgrowth and a few other things that I can't remember.

I told her that I really think it's something contagious since my other two dogs had the same thing. So maybe we should try deworming her. She said she doubts it's worms and Bailey had a bad reaction to drontal, but let's see what the results from the panel are.

Bailey is always at the park and other dogs as well. Is there any way I can buy panacur without having to go to the vet?

I got mine from lambertvetsupply but later I found safeguard which is essentially same med but different company at Petco.

you have to buy what your pup weight or combine 10 and 20 gram packets for 30 lbs pup for example/ 1 gm per 10 lbs/. Same as Justicemom I keep them at the house for routine wormings, you have to do 3 consecutive days of treatments so one package will have 3 doses. If your pup is 35 lbs go to 4 gm package.

Let's see what happens with this TLI blood test (malnutrition). Keep your fingers crossed that it all comes back negative. When it does and if the vet will not prescribe panacur, I will pick up some safeguard at petco. I'll deworm Bailey on Friday night. Since I don't work weekends, i'll be home to monitor her. If it all goes well, I'll deworm my parents' dogs as well.

I'm so sorry Bailey is still having problems...please give her a hug from me!
I don't have any suggestions for you; it sounds like you are doing everything you possibly can do to get to the bottom of what is ailing her.

Good luck and I hope she is back to normal very, very soon!

Thank you Patty :)

So, I thought about Bailey's stomach issue, the coincidences and Danielle mentioning coccidia...

I don't think she has worms because she on interceptor all year round. It's possible she could have worms, but I don't think it's likely. I don't think it's giardia either because if it was, the metrondozle would've cleared it up.

I think the fact that both times Bailey had reoccurring diarrhea a month after transitioning to wellness kibble is a coincidence. However, I do not think it is a coincidence that Bailey got sick only a day after both sheltie gatherings.

I think it may be coccidia. She had it when I first brought her home as a puppy. If coccidia is a parasite that is dormant and crops up when a dog is under stress, then I think very possible. The first sheltie picnic I went to last October, she was only 4 months old, it was her first time on a long car trip (not including the ride home from the breeder) and she was a little nervous around some of the dogs. The sheltie meet up last month in CT was the longest car trip she's been on (3 hours) and she was a little nervous in the xpen with all the other shelties. She didn't seemed that stressed and was even playing with Six, but maybe that little bit of nervousness was enough to cause a coccidia flare up? The only thing that confuses me is she has been on a bunch of hour long car trips, has been to other dog meets and more stressful situations than the sheltie meet ups, yet she didn't get diarrhea....

I'm going to discuss this with my vet when they call with the results of her TLI blood panel. It might be worth it to get a prescription of albon and treat her just in case. Nothing else seems to be working.

Randi,

I haven't read all of the posts to this thread but I wanted to chime in here and say I have been thinking of you and Boopka and my thoughts have been with you in spirit.

(We have had out of town company and the garden coming in and I just haven't been able to keep up with the threads. Everyone is going home on Saturday and hopefully by Sunday night, I will have time to sit down and read.)

Give Bailey a big hug for me and MMM and my prayers are that she is feeling better.

I'm sorry its taken me so long to comment on this thread. I know I commented on the other one you posted a long time ago but I've just been so wrapped up with my own troubles that I haven't even been reading other threads until today.

I really feel for you and have an idea what you're going through. Sadie had unexplained bouts of vomiting and diarrhea on and off for months (around 6 months).

After being on parasite medication (Panacur), bringing in multiple fecal samples and spending a fortune on blood work we still didn't know what was wrong with her, everything came back normal or inconclusive.

I eventually put her on a hypoallergenic dog food for close to a year, which calmed things down. She's never had the problem since.

Since Sadie and Bailey are two different dogs I can't really give you much advice, except go to a vet you trust and hang in there, try to stay positive (haha, that's funny coming from me!).

If you get stuck without any medication for diarrhea like on a weekend, Imodium (Loperamide) can be used to stop it temporarily (start with half). Dogs can also be given Gravol (Dimenhydrinate)for an upset tummy, I usually give 1/4 to 1/2.

Like I said, hypoallergenic vet food really helped Sadie, I just wish I'd trusted my vet and put my own feelings/prejudicies regarding vet food aside and tried it sooner. It took care of all her problems and Sadie loved the taste.

I can't hurt to try treating her for coccidia, even if it doesn't work that could at least rule it out.

I was sure that Sadie had Giardia and she was treated repeatedly for it without success.
