Stupid Pet Tricks

Smudge

Is there a way to teach your sheltie to "talk"? Smudge loves to sit in my mom and dad's room while my mom is on the computer and "talk" to her. My mom and I have been growling at Smudge trying to get him to say "I love you". Only it comes out like "I wub ew!" in a growl. My mom saw a youtube video and is convinced that Smudge must learn how. Fluffy was never considered because she barks less than Smudge. She never "talks", and only howls when she is being mistreated (in other words: IGNORED!).

Stupid pet tricks make the world go round.

The only thing I'm afraid of is that in the process of trying to get a sound out that Smudge is going to get confused and think he is being treated to bark. The last thing in the world I want is for Smudge to start barking. Fluffy and Smudge both are pretty good about being quiet and not barking.

I've heard the "I love you" dog before. I think that the only way to teach it would be through shaping. So first you click and treat for any of the "talking" then, when he knows what you want, click and treat for ones that sound like I love you. Who knows if it would work! It sure would be cool if it did, though!

I was googling how to do it, and it seems like it's luck of the draw. Don't know how true it is, but some of the websites claim that certain breeds are able to forum words better - collies are one of them. They say to treat the "talking", and to keep doing it the way I have already been doing. Go back and forth with the "talking". Smudge talks, and after he is done I say "I wub ew!".

Of course, one girl claimed it took her dog two years to get it... :uhoh:

If I can teach Smudge how to do it I'm going to make him give me a kiss afterwards. Hahahaha! I wub ew! ::Kiss::

I sure wish I had the time in my life to teach my pups "stupid dog tricks"!

I'd be happy if I had time to stay on top of the basics! :rolleyes2::sadsmile:

Well, I'm having to take time away from actual obedience class because I'm afraid I'm looking at surgery. :dead: I'm going to schedule a dr appointment next week to find out. So no classes for Smuff until at least August, depending on what the doctor says.

It's like my obedience instructor says though - training isn't and shouldn't be a day long process. You take 10 minutes for each dog twice a day. That means for somebody with two dogs that's 40 minutes a day. Everybody can give up one tv show. Well, I say that, but Animal Planet is hard to step away from.

This is kind of what I'm going for. Only I don't want it in song form - I wanted it spoken:

Also, for a bit of randomness, here is the video that gave me the idea for Smudge's name. :biggrin2:

My brother taught my lab Jo to say I love you, years ago whenever that Little Caesar's commerial was. She make lots of woo woo and talking noises to began with, all he did was make the sounds and she repeated them after sometime. Then he rewarded her. If she was so naturally inclined to make those noises it was have been really hard.:smile2:
