Sunscreen

We have sunshine 360+ days a year and we're at a high elevation (5000+ ft), so less protection from UV. I've heard you have to be careful to protect blue and black coats from too much sun to avoid rusting. I haven't noticed any problems with Phebe's coat, but we're outside quite a bit at least 2 hours most days and usually in the sun. Any recommendations on what kind of sunscreen to use on her coat?

We use the ice on ice leave in conditioner when we brush the dogs. It has suncreen in it, and it seems to work in the hot/sunny southern summers here :)

Well, then we must get some Ice on Ice.

LOL, Janet! You know there are doggles. My GSD friend has them for her dog because the poor thing has panus.

SheltieGuy, I hesitated to ask because I didn't want people think I was gloating. If it makes you feel any better we had about 3 inches of snow 2 days ago. To tell you the truth, I look forward to gray days and rain because it's a change.

I also recommend the Ice on Ice. You do need to be careful of the sun for sure. It will also help from it drying out as well.

I notice in the summer, Indy gets a reddish caste to his black fur, but in the winter (with less sun and outside time) it goes back to pure black.

The Ice on Ice is on its way! I also ordered a White on White kit so I can give the shampoo, etc. a try before buying large bottles, and of course I needed a proper pin brush, too.

I ordered from Chris Christensen because their shipping was $9 v. $12.99 for Cherrybrook. The other products were the same price on both sites, but the Ice on Ice was $10 at CC and $12 at Cherrybrook.

SUNSCREEN!!!! must be nice ... we are getting a foot of snow this evening !!!!:cry:

As someone who is a fair skinned red head and who should wear sunscreen all year round (yeah, I should, but I often forget), please indulge me for a moment -

We should really wear sunscreen all year round, ESPECIALLY on the cloudy days when you can't see the sun - including during the winter. Its the UV that burns us and the UV can get you when its cloudy because you think "sun" screen. I've gotten some of my nastiest burns on cloudy days.

The same is true with our dogs. We should protect their fur all year round. When there is snow on the ground it reflects the UV up just like liquid water does.

OK, I'm going to get off that soapbox now. Thanks!

I also recommend Ice on Ice. I've been using it since the holidays and I LOVE how soft it leaves his coat between professional groomings. I've had so many complements on his soft coat since I started using it. (I also feed good quality food.) It also smells wonderful. The sunscreen protection was another reason I started using it.

I bought the 16oz "Ready to Use" Ice on Ice because I wanted to try it before making a larger investment. Once I use up this bottle, I'm going to purchase the concentrated version. The nice thing about the 16oz Ready to Use bottle - it has a mark on it for how much of the concentrated formula to use.

Good information on both counts -- I'm very fair-skinned, too and always use moisturizer and makeup products with at least SPF 30. On an additional note, did you know that SPF is cumulative? If you use a moisturizer that is 30 and follow with a makeup product that is 15, you've achieved a UV protection value of SPF 45.
