Does anyone give their furkids supplements, like Omega 3 for skin/coat/everything else? Right now, Pogo is getting fed Innova Puppy food, but I wonder if I supplement his diet with an Omega 3 vitamin to give him a more beautiful, silky coat would help.

What does everyone use here? I've done some research and like this product, "Nordic Naturals Omega 3 Pet". Any thoughts/advise/suggestions?
 
My guys get a raw diet so I try to provide everything naturally. Fish and grass fed red meats when possible. When we are low on those items (maybe once or twice a month), I include a liquid omega supplement. I basically just offer it when I feel it is needed. When the coats start looking a little dull, add a bit of fish oil and it clears right up. But I don't need to give it on a daily basis.

I don't bother with the special dog-specific omegas ... it's all the same in the bottle. You are just paying a higher price for the picture of the dog on the label. Check out drug stores or health food stores for the human supplements. They are often much cheaper and the standards for production are often higher.

The big thing to pay attention to is that you are giving a "fish body" oil (often made of sardines and/or anchovies) and not a "fish liver" oil. The liver oils are very high in vitamin A and D, both fat soluble vitamins that can lead to toxicity if overdosed.

The only supplement I offer regularly is Dog Gone Pain for Gio's bad leg/back. It's a marvelous supplement and I have seen much better joint improvement on it than I ever saw with glucosamine/chondroitin!

I use fish oil capsules from Costco -- cheap and effective!!
 
So, just regular fish oil capsules or Omega 3 tablets from my local Walgreens/Target, huh? Thanks everyone!! I'm going right now! Well, that and to pick up some other stuff, too...I love my Target!! :biggrin2::lol:
 
Ok, I got some natural omega-3 fish oil 1200 mg. GeeRom, thanks for the advise. I checked this and it does contain the fish body oil you were talking about.

With all that said, is it ok to give one pill to my pup daily? He's about 12 lbs.

I'd start with one capsule 2-3 times a week. I wouldn't go every day. It is pretty hard to OD on omegas, but too much can cause the hair problem to go the other way ... greasy! So start with one every couple of days and see what happens from there.
 
I agree with Dayna. My gang gets two a day -- escept for Annie. Too much and her coat gets greasy-looking.

I gave Pogo one last night. Right now I'm trying to figure out what to mix it in so he's none the wiser.....:lol: Giving it to him straight seems to be a big pill right now for a little pup.
 
Is it a liquid filled capsule? You could always prick it with a pin and squish the liquid onto his food. Then he will just eat it all up with the rest of dinner.

I prefer the liquid omegas for that reason. Avoid the mess of popping capsules and just add a couple of drops straight to the food when needed.

We say, "Who wants fish gum?" They all come a runnin'!!!:lol: They've always loved to pop-n-chew.
