Surprise From Acana (Yay for Fromm)

Haven't been on . . . was the holiday house . . . another shocker (or not). My mom's friend has fed her dog TOTW bison puppy. This bag has been a nightmare with gastro / anal glands. She has spoken to the "staff vet" at TOTW. The TOTW "vet" stated that they can't get bison so they are using buffalo. The friend asked my mom what that is about. A quick google gave me an education on bovine family members. American bison (bison bison) are related to European bison. They are also similar enough to cattle to interbreed (though none have ever wanted to). Buffalo, on the other hand, come from two locales. One is the African buffalo (the one with the funky wig looking horns) and the other is the Asian Water Buffalo. They are NOT that closely related to bison via DNA. India is currently by far the Asian Water Buffalo capital of the world. Oooopppppps. Whoever this person is actually stated 1. they substituted another entire animal in a recipe with no disclaimer and 2. they get the meat offshore because there are only a few herds in the US with Water Buffalo and those are used for dairy / cheese. Gotta love Diamond!

Sticking to Fromm. I totally agree with the single source meats. We could probably do well with the Beef one. It seems my shepherd handles beef quite well. The shelties . . . bombproof . . . but I liked the low fat in the Gold Prairie Large Breed Adult.

touche on your research efforts, but see that is the kinda stuff that makes me LIVID about pet food companies lately, they aren't about quality control anymore, and they don't realize that changing a formula, and not disclosing that, could have disastrous results for some and they wouldn't KNOW why, hello, that is beyond CRUEL imho. But they could be rushing to the Vet and of course the Vet probably wouldn't know and so they are trying to decipher and possibly treat a pet for a reaction when they do NOT even KNOW what they are reacting TO...ugh. Which scares the living out of me, because I had friends lose beloved pets overnight during the China treat ordeal.

I feed Fromm Senior to my older and my one overweight dog, its kept the weight off him. The rest of mine are on Fromm Classic, Its the same ingredients as the Eukanuba I used to use until euk discontinued it and was brought out..as long as my food is made by animal food company and has little to no recalls its all good for me.

That is interesting about Acana. I feed Acana and honestly, I'm okay with the meat ratios because I like to switch up the food. In fact, I'm happy I no longer have to do the incremental switch in fear of explosive butt issues. I realized, for Koji, the more specific his meals (meaning, one protein, one food, consistently), the more likely if something changed, it'd affect him in that no fun way. I am in no way defending Acana, I still hate that they do this, but let's be real, human food companies do it all the time too.

I did like what you, and everyone else, has written about Fromm though. I've always liked Fromm as a company and a brand. And obviously, they are awesome. :) I was trying to recall why I never used Fromm and after looking at their foods (OMG, the bag designs have changed so much!), I realized why. Unfortunately, I was never excited about most of their foods containing potato/peas as a second or third ingredient. Potatoes and peas caused skin allergies in Miko. The only thing that fixed it was a grain and potato free diet, which ruled out Fromm. :( Not sure if Koji has that issue since he's been grain/potato free since I've had him.

Go Fromm! I'm still good with Acana though. Oh, I saw this on their website.

Fresh chicken meat (13%), chicken meal (12%), turkey meal (11%), red lentils, whole green peas (8%), field beans, fresh chicken giblets (liver, heart, kidney) (4%), herring meal (4%), fresh whole eggs (4%), fresh whole flounder (4%), herring oil (3%), chicken fat (3%), sun-cured alfalfa, green lentils, whole yellow peas, pea fiber, fresh chicken cartilage (2%),

I wonder if, with the new line (Heritage), they'll have to keep the ingredients as stated, since heck, they listed percentages. And by doing so, they will need to follow that or risk getting sued if pets get sick. Ugh.

So glad you found something that worked. I sooo understand the hardships of finding a food. Trust me TOTW got nixed long ago due to gastro issues too. Acana has been good to us, I doubt I'll change unless there's a health reason for it.

We switched Barley from Acana Puppy to Fromm Gold Puppy when he was 3 months old and he's done awesome on the Fromm. I love this food so much! He's on adult food now and we're switching between the Fromm Adult Gold and the Fromm 4-Star line - getting a different bag each time and that's working out well for him.

His coat is super shiny, and he's doing really well. In fact our breeder commented he was a bit too thin - we kept him on the same amount of adult food as we did with puppy, but obviously the adult has less calories. So he's getting a bit more food now, but doing amazing.

Fromm customer service has always been excellent as well. I just love this food! Haha it's silly, it just makes me happy to buy it and have it in my kitchen. I love everything about it - from the ingredients to the smell to the bag design. And have total trust in it.
