Tape Worms

Anyone have any clue why Ruckus seems to keep tape worms!!! There are NO fleas or flea dirt anywhere on him. Its getting very annoying, and not to mention its 16 dollars for tape worm tablets!
 
Any rabbits around? I think there is some controversy whether dogs eating rabbit poop can get tapeworm from it. The tapeworm segments actually are sacs that contain eggs. I guess that if the rabbit has tapeworm and segments come out with the poop which is in turn a dog's yummy treat, the dog could be the next host for tapeworm. But, I'm no expert on the subject!
 
I had a cat that constantly got tape worms and she never had flea problems.

My only guess is that fleas are everywhere outside, especially in grass and even if your dog isn't infested with them, given the tiny size of fleas maybe your dog is still managing to ingest the odd one or some other insect that can carry tape worms.

Have you thought about having your yard treated for insects. :rolleyes2: I treat my yard yearly with Sevin. It kills all fleas, ticks, and various other creepy crawlers. With Sevin The day you know it will get a substantial rain you spread the Sevin down and let the rain wash it in after its washed in the lawn is safe for the animals to go on. This has worked very well for me I have done this since I have owned dogs. 14 years now.:wink2:
 
I have used sevin in the yard one time when I had a bad flea problem.

Actually Ruckus ADORES rabbit poop and is a regular eater of it no matter how hard i try to keep him from eating it!

Ruckusluvr, what kind of heartworm prevenative do you have the dogs on? I know that there are two kinds that help with other parasites aside from just heartworm. I have all of my girls on Sentinal. Not sure if that would help but you may want to ask your vet if you aren't already using it.
 
Hmmm, I'm curious now. I will have to find the website for sentinel and see if it lists tapeworms on there. I know that it helps prevent flea infestations on dogs. It won't kill the fleas themselves but it keeps them from reproducing.
 
tapeworms are some nasty things. The housecats get them, and she has to deworm them pretty often.
Mom bought some of the expensive deflea stuff for the cats, and now can't find it! She thinks it is probably lost on the desk somewhere.

The dogs here get dewormed frequently, too. Mom says it is because of the livestock. As soon as mom sees a worm in someone's poop, BAM....deworming time. Ooh, and a few days ago, mom saw Ruger's poop and it looked like he might have a tapeworm.
Mom uses Safeguard 10% suspension, cattle and goat dewormer, that she orders specially from the supply store. It costs about $100 for a 33.8 oz bottle. A website says the dosage for dogs is 1cc per 5 lbs, but the vet says it is 1cc per 4 lbs. Safeguard kills roundworms, tapeworms, hookworms and whipworms, but to kill the whipworms, it must be given three days in a row.
Some of us dogs really like the taste.....
