Teaching Beckon to Smile

So I got this nutty idea to teach Colonel Underpants to smile on command. I say, "Smile!" and lift his lip on both sides. So far, he's beginning to twitch them up a bit. Wish us luck -- I think it would be great to be able to get him to grin!

We tought our BC/Aussie mix to do it. She already did it naturally when she thought she was in trouble. All we had to do was say "What are you doing, Scout?", not even in a mean voice.. and she would "smile". We're still working on incorporating the word "smile" into it. She's such a goofball. I think it's easier to teach if they already kinda do it...

I had a Border Collie who did this, except her command was "pretty teeth!" Never once did it not make everyone at the vet's office smile.

This is also the dog I taught to pay for his own food at Petsmart. I'd hand him the money, and he'd very carefully give it to the cashier.

Oh, what fun! I have to admit that I've totally failed in the fun tricks department! I just don't have the energy! Chris and Ann, you are an inspiration and reminder to me that I really must do more fun stuff with my dogs!
