I wouldn't normally put a coat on Sadie, but due to this summer's stressful events, she lost pretty much all of her undercoat and its been very cold here.

I wanted something that would protect her from the elements, especially the wind, but not make her too warm. She was racing around in it last night but never seemed to get too hot.
 
that the thing I am wondering cold weather is actually a factor that builds up nice thick fur coat- I know some breeders from south states have practice to send their pups up north to build up their coat for conformation events...
would not putting a coat on the pup be counterproductive?

Not if she's freezing to death when the windchill is -30 deg C.

Our trainer actually recommended it, since its been so cold. She has Aussies.

My girl is currently is wearing her climate changer and neopaws booties when we go out. It has only got up to -33 celcius so far but it gets up to -50 here. Its almost scary cold so i worry about her. it takes the ease of my mind that she is always warm. if she ever starts panting at all the jacket comes off ASAP. but that hasnt happened unless she is jumping through 3 feet of snow. (she is only about 11 inches at the shoulder so thats a big workout for her!)

Its easy for someone who dosnt live here to say they dont need jackets, but if you ever come up here you might regret telling people what you think they are doing is wrong...

Yes, its been very cold here and winter hasnt even started yet! Sadie did a lot of racing around yesterday and never panted once, so I think I did the right thing, getting her a coat. I've been a bit worried about little Ginny too. Even though she has a great coat, she's tiny so I'm wondering if she feels the cold more.
 
Thats the same thing with lacey. she is so tiny the snow comes up so far on her but her coat truly is great. she is 11 months and only like 11 pounds! Around 11 inches at the shoulder too. (11,11,11... i never noticed that!) Im pretty sure the small shelties feel the cold more. I know her paws get cold because she always lifts them when she isnt wearing the booties. I got lacey the XXXS booties in ruffwear but they are WAY to big. Im trying to sell them on my local classifieds with no such luck. (lost the receipt.)
 
As we discussing breed closely related to other Northern Arctic weather tolerant breeds who have built in double weather protective coats, unless the dog is sick, very young or very old there should not be a reason why we need to dress up our pups... IMHO
As I was recently watching few young high school boys coming to bus stop wearing swearshirt hoodies when older folks looked like overstuffed cabbages in their layered clothing I was thinking that high level of thyroid is probably what responsible for high level of cold tolerance in our dogs as well in young
teens...
Of course we all know few of northern breed dogs that would not step a foot outside and would hold until they burst because there is few drops of rain and ground is wet:lol:
as far as small pups go rocket pocket Leo at 4 months and 9 lbs is balming himself chasing his older playmates like there is no tomorrow even in a tough bone chilling weather we recently faced... it is a boy thing, I am sure:wink2:
 
I haven't ever used a coat or boots on my dogs. They are/were never outside very long when it was cold. Even last Feb/March when Emma was shaved for her echocardiogram (and I mean most of both sides of her chest) I never put a coat on her, just monitored how long she was out for and brought her in right away. Dad did the same when he had her out. Granted there are exceptions when coats are needed. The exception to being outside for short periods of time was Noah. He had a very heavy coat and loved to be outside inthe cold. He would even lie in the snow in his favourite spots and it never seemed to bother him.

Well like I said, due to the stress of becoming 75% paralyzed this summer, Sadie lost the majority of her coat, so I don't think putting an insulating coat on her is over kill.

Are you for real! Is it really that cold - how do you cope? I think i would go nuts in that kind of winter. We get down to -9 degrees and I find that unbearable, mind you I also find +40degrees absolutely unbearable - I'm just not up for waether extremes.
