The hair is growing back

Yipee! Diva's hair is finally starting to grow back after 5 months of falling out.

Up until last weekend there were still quite a few stray guard hairs coming out(even with many bathes, brushing etc) and then when she was as naked as she could be ,it suddenly stopped. I have been line brushing her daily the last week and have not gotten even a half a brush full of hair off her. I can see and feel the undercoat coming in and she still has a short coat but it is starting to feel so thick. :smile2:

I never thought I would be so excited to see hair growing. The baby boys adult coat is starting to come in too. Who will get it first? Right now the boys coat is heavier than Diva's

I know what you mean!! I am hoping Belle's coat comes in by the end of April so I can show her. Why do they have to loose so much fur after having puppies

I was looking at pictures of my forever pup at about 3 years old. He had such a lovely long flowing coat!

Both Indy and Bacca at almost 3 years seem to be taking forever to get that same coat.

Indy is abundant with undercoat, but his guard hairs are short, so they just stick out and make him look fat.

Bacca has great feathers on his legs, but like Indy, he's guard hair is still very short.

This is Timber at about 3, or 4 or 5.

Can't wait for Indy and Bacca to catch up!

Oh yay. Glad to hear it. Just curious, why do their coats fall out when they're pregnant (that is why her coat fell out right)?

I doubt my boys will ever have that full coat I see. They look scraggly, but still cute! Only when Koji is flying (as seen here), does he look fluffy. Oh wait, Miko looks full sometimes. Koji though, is still waiting on his big boy coat. LOL

Not sure about dogs, but I know (okay, think I remember reading somewhere) that with humans the hair growing cycle during pregnancy isn't in the normal 6 week stages. It is a long, continuous cycle in which all hair follicles are stimulated for the length of the pregnancy. Afterward, when the hormone levels drop, you 'shed' a bunch of hair.

That would explain why my hair is growing so darn fast! I JUST got a haircut the weekend before last and I've grown about 1/2-3/4 an inch on my bangs.

That's wonderful! I'm glad to hear that her coat is coming back in. :smile2:

In the fall I was so disappointed when Sadie lost most of her coat. She looked completely naked with no undercoat and her once beautiful, full tail looked so ratty.

She had to wear a coat for a long time but Sadie's coat is finally starting to look like it used to again. I couldn't be happier. :biggrin2:

Pretty much the same thing in dogs. During pregnancy their coat gets so pretty or blooms. Then after whelping, hormones and stress to the body causes the hair to enter the telogen or non growing(shedding phases) prematurely and all at once so about 2 weeks later or all the hair starts to fall out at once. Usually seen in long haired dogs more dramaticly although I saw a big Choc Lab go completely bald when her pups were about 6 wks old. I do mean bald it was quite the site.:smile2::lol: ALthough her owner was quite freaked out.

I think the techinal term is telogenic defluxion or effluvium. You can also see this with other body stress such as high fever, chemotherapy, injury, or anesthesia for example. I think it is so dramatic after pregnancy because it so much of the coat was growing before.

It took 6 mos after Gypsy's neck was shaved to even feel stubble but once the stubble appeared POOF!! her hair has grown in so thick and she is just a bundle of fur. Now I am waiting for her pants to grow back from all the hairloss from her allergies. Before you know it I may have a Sheltie with an entire coat of fur.:wink2:

Thanks for the detailed explanation. I was just curious. I thought they lost it during pregnancy, but I see it's afterwards. Remind me not to have a baby. I like my hair. LOL. J/K.
