I didn't know that! Are you sure that you can't register her with AKC? Interesting.
Yea, I'm pretty sure that they won't register sable merles, and I'm not sure about the reasoning, but the most logical thing I've heard was because when sable merles get older, they tend to lose their merle marbling, which can confuse judges (or whoever registers dogs for the AKC) into thinking that they are just sables. This is a huge problem if anyone were to ever breed a sable merle while thinking it is a sable, because if you breed a sable merle to a blue merle (or any other dog who has the merle gene, I think) you could end up with double merle puppies, which tend to have horrible hearing and sight problems.
Hello fellow Sheltie enthusiasts!
I'm new to the forum, and just wanted to say hi! I'm 26 years old and I grew up with sable Shelties and just can't imagine owning any other kind of dog. I'm so excited to be able to meet so many other Sheltie lovers.
I just adopted my own Sheltie, a sable merle with one blue eye, and I named her Nova. As of right now she is 9 weeks old, and I just tipped her ears (with chewing gum, which is actually working out nicely), because they just started to stand up when she began teething. I plan to agility train her, and I'm here to learn even more stuff about the breed and get guidance on training and things of that nature. So, hiyo everyone! :-D
