The no no list

So just when I have Harper Lee set in stone, diet wise, the government no no list comes out with foods not to eat unless they are organic, due to overtly large amounts of pesticides and don't you just know that white potatos and green beans made the no no list. Geez Louise.

Imagine how my husband reacted when I went shopping for organic produce for our sheltie. Actually he shook his head, he knows how important these things are for her, for us.

So now, Harper is organic girl. Even her chicken is pricier Purdue, and all fish is bought from the fish market, not packaged. Oh yes, there is a list for fish also, it is the 'Pregnant women and children list' of what not to eat and what to eat and how much of each to eat in a month.

If the people who come out with this list could just do the dance, you know the dance, it used to be the 'do the right thing' dance, now people shove each other around and do the 'spend more money to eat right' dance. It should all be so simple to do the right thing. Don't you think?

I'm glad to hear about the chicken and fish and veggies being organic! I wonder if I could get my cat to do cooked diet. Organic does make me feel better, but local makes me feel the best. I have found our local farmers market to be cheaper than the health food store a lot of time and I really love talking to the person who grew the food and just getting to know them weekly -- it's really a cool thing to me!

I know how you feel, though, about really realizing just how bad the food is out there. I just heard something on NPR I believe about how 1 in 2 things of chicken tests positive for Salmonella and 1 in 4 ground turkey and I believe also 1 in 2 for ground beef. It wasn't just salmonella either, lots of other stuff. OMG and the veggies were so bad. I'm going to look for the article. Something like 30 pesticides in one peach!Gross!

I just spent $300 for four months and two weeks worth of food for my three dogs. It comes out to be about $20 a month per dog. It's from a website that owns a farm and they raise bunnies, ducks, and goats. They source other meat local, not feed lots, and it's fed properly, no antibiotics, and no hormones. It's really comforting knowing they're getting quality food! They also get local free-range eggs weekly. They seriously we better than us sometimes!!!

Mine will be enjoying fresh veggies out of my garden :) I have a bunch of stuff going, and they will be getting some of th extra. Of course, it's not something I'm just doing for the dogs. I enjoy gardening and love having the home grown veggies to eat. The little brats were constantly raiding the garden for squash, tomatoes, and cucumbers last year :P
They will happily take them in place of premade dog treats. After the dog food fiasco, I'd much ather give them fresh veggies from my garden than dog treats.
From what I'm doing so far, I'm spending about $13 per month per dog on raw. Can't wait to get up to Ohio for a dog show so I can hit the turkey plant for 40lb $8 turkey miscuts

Purdue consistently tests out for the best in the chicken safety government tests. That is not to say it is perfect, it tests out 57% to the good, which is better than what else is available out there. Organic is best we just don't happen to be near any organics.

Mary, yes our pups do eat a little better than us don't they! And Hope we also have a garden, not so much as you but it is beginning. Since we switched to organic produce we can taste the difference in quality. Even the potatos, which have to be kept refrigerated to preserve freshness, taste real potato-ie, like they used to. And my husband and I don't even mind the second jobs we have had to aquire to pay for the better organics! (A little food humor.)

I try getting my Angel Organic or local produce/meats. I also try getting them for myself. I want Angel to have the best, and good food just costs more. I think its worth it (if I have the money at the time) :)

Gardening is a way of life here too. Most treats are homemade, chicken comes from local whole food markets and rest of the meat is from mypetcarnivore.com which delivers or pick up for midwest states. I find their produce to be great quality and my boys just gotta have their tripe.
