Toby's Doing Great!
Toby continues to make excellent progress with his leash issues and other issues. I sent the following email to his foster Mom a few minutes ago. We're so pleased with how he is doing and love him to bits already. We're so fortunate to have him and I'm SO GLAD that I pushed my DH this time, instead of letting Toby pass us by.
"I've been walking him twice daily most days and taking him near high traffic areas as often as possible. As a result, he is MUCH better around traffic and hardly seems bothered by it at all anymore. He's walked by a moving back-hoe, bus, motorcycle, various loud trucks and bicycles without so much as blinking an eye lash. He's behaving on leash better around dogs but still needs some work. He does great walking by people now, even those with children and baby buggies but still startles if a person on a porch happens to make a noise when we walk by. Even then, his reaction is a quarter of what it was and he recovers quickly. He hardly pulls anymore at all, with or without the gentle leader, but I'm going to continue using it for a while longer, since it seems to calm his nervousness.
He's doing better around men too. He's still unsure about Dale right now but has met several nice men and is approaching them with much less hesitance than before. We went for a walk with good friend of mine from down the street and his dogs a couple of nights ago. John, my friend, walked Toby with his dog and Toby performed like a champ and was very well behaved.
Teaching him to potty in the appropriate place has been the biggest challenge so far but we made good progress this weekend. He now understands that we WANT him to go in the potty corner, that its not a bad thing. He just doesn't WANT to go there, as he prefers to relieve himself on grass so he still holds out on us some times, thinking that we'll take him to his preferred area. We've compromised (for now), and moved the x-pen to allow a tiny amount of grass for him. He's still resisting us but I'm hoping that if we keep encouraging him and giving him treats that eventually he'll stop. He's not quite on the same schedule as the girls, I think mainly because of the resistance to the corner, so we're hoping that will change in the coming weeks too.
He's well behaved inside but as you said, he wants to play 24/7. We've taken to leashing him at times to help him settle. Once he's settled we can take it off and he'll relax with the girls.
He's getting along great with both Sadie and Ginny. He politely tries to entice Sadie to play, to which she often declines unless she's outside (Her back legs are weak and the floors are slippery). Then the three of them rough house and chase each other around. Ginny has been completely worn out every night since Toby came to live with us. They're constantly egging each other on to play. We also think that Ginny and Toby are in love, they're so cute."
