Throwing up

We got through 1 day!

Holly kept the chicken and rice down yesterday and I was so relieved. I divided one boneless/skinless chicken breast and a cup of rice into 4 small servings. She tried to push some of the rice aside after the chicken was consumed each time so I'm not sure she ate an entire cup of it. The breast was not huge, more along the line of a chicken steak or breast filet size; I'm going to give her the same food again today, but I wanted to ask - what do you think is an appropriate amount? I don't want to stuff her, but as I was about to boil another breast this morning, I wasn't sure if I was providing enough? Roughly, how many cup/s of the mixture should I give her for the entire day?

My thanks again,

Janice

We didn't get through the day after all....

:(

The dog threw up the chicken & rice I gave her earlier today. Fed her at 6 a.m. then a little more around 11 a.m. Went shopping and came home after 1 p.m. to find two throw-ups, each in a different room. Tried to offer a bit of food now and she does not want it. We have a 5:30 vet appt. They are going to do another blood test (the last was in December, a "chemistry 17 panel" and an "electrolyte 4 panel"). We used Deramaxx for a few months and I will be very distressed if I caused her harm by giving it to her. Our vet told us it was ok to use so long as we had her liver/kidney levels checked every 6 months. I have no idea whats going on now but please keep us in your thoughts. Thank you,

Janice

I'm sorry to hear this, Janice. I sure hope she's OK. Glad you're seeing the vet, it's always a good idea when this kind of thing continues. We're sending good thoughts your way and please let us know what happens.

thank you

Thank you for your encouragement. Unfortunately, its a kidney infection or kidney disease. The vet drew blood and urine and told me the numbers were elevated but in my duress, I can't remember what the actual numbers are! I wish I would have asked the vet I saw last Friday to draw the blood then - just to pacify myself - but I didn't suspect anything like this. The dog is drinking water, and urinating - neither one excessively. And today is the first day she rejected food, but not til later this aft.

Vet said that if its an infection, it can be treated with antibiotics but if it is disease, then probably medication & diet. Gosh, I am ready to cry for my sweet baby. I had her checked in December and everything was okay. The
vet said I didn't do it to her by using Deramaxx these last 3 months but not to give her anymore. She is doing a urine culture which I believe takes 3 days to 'mature' but she said she may know a little tomorrow so I will be calling her in the morning. Also gave the dog shots of subcutaneous fluids, famotidine, baytril and cerenia and said I could try offering the dog a little bit of Iams food for gastro-intestinal problems...that would not be long term kidney diet (if she needs that) but it would help short-term, maybe with the vomiting/nauseau issues. If the dog doesn't eat today or tomorrow, she may have to be hospitalized for IV fluid therapy.

Has anyone had a dog treated for kidney disease? I asked her if the dog was going to survive, and she said its treatable but I just don't completely understand what that means yet.

Thank you for listening.

I hope your little girl responds to the treatment. My first Sheltie had kidney disease...she had elevated levels at a fairly young age, around 5. We did treat her with the prescription kidney food for several years (no meds at that point) and her levels did improve and she lived to 13. So there are options.

I hope you don't have to wait too long for the results. That's always the worst part. Good luck, and do keep us posted.
