Thundershirt and car anxiety.

If not does has anyone got any tips for calming an extremely anxious fearful dog in the car. I have been working with her in the car since February and she is not getting any less anxious. I don't know how I missed this thread! I actually do use the thundershirt for Ruutu on car trips. He used to be the perfect well traveled pup and then one day a semi truck scared him (Granted, we drive 1,000 miles in one month, sometimes more... thanks PA for being far from NC) Ruutu used to just never settle. No main issues other than he would never just stay in one spot. He's pace back and forth, jump to the front seat, jump to the back seat, sit on the floor, jump to the front etc...


Using the thundershirt actually changed him for the better. We just started using it on him in June. He was much calmer and lays down and sleeps during car rides again like he used to when he was a baby. I highly recommend going for it. Also, watch where you buy it from as most stores will allow you to return it within so many days if it doesn't work. I was going to buy it online, but I liked the option of being able to return it if it did nothing for him.

Since we've bought it, we've only used it twice because he stayed in PA from June-July but it seriously has been the greatest thing. Now we once again have an 8 hour car ride in peace.
 
I have a thundershirt for Indy. It works like a charm.

What I like about it is that I don't have to pre-dose him....I just put it on when he needs it

That being said, for dogs that are generally anxious, I hightly recommend Head to Tail calming treats....100% natural, and my staff can attest to the success.

I like the idea of these treats. Going to gave to see if I can order them online, not sold in stores around me. Although the tundershirt is helping with the storms. Thanks for the recommendation.
 
I have a Thundershirt that I use occasionally for Indy. It works wonders for Thunderstorms, and just today I was thinking about using it in the car. Indy doesn't seem stressed in the car, but when I take him out he is covered in drool. I'm thinking that wrapping him up might make a difference for him

The Thundershirts really do work, and I highly recommend them. You can also look into calming treats (check out Head to Tail - all natural, no sedatives)

What I like about Thundershirts is that there is nothing going into their bodies. The principle is similar to swaddling a baby. Wrap them tight so they feel secure.

When I put the TS on Indy, he just kinda freezes. He doesn't lay down, but neither does he go crazy. He just stands. I fed him today though with the TS on and he ate fine, but also without his usual feeding frenzy.

TS stands by their product, btw. So if you are not satisfied you can get a full refund. Don't let you pet store tell you otherwise!!!!

Thanks for replying. I like to hear opinions by other people who have used it. I bought it and have used it once so far. It didn't seem to help to much but Nala was already stressed and anxious before we got to the car because a really loud noise really frightened her on the walk down the road to the car. I'm going to use it again tomorrow and see how it goes :)
 
My trainer said it takes a couple times for the dog to sort of get it. She had an Aussie that needed it and she said it was maybe the 3 or 4th time before she saw it really changed the car ride.

Thanks for letting me know! I will try it out a few times before I deciedif it works for Nala or not. fingers crossed :smile2:
