Tips and tricks for shoving those pesky pills down her precious little throat

I tried to be funny with the subject ;-P

We were talking on another thread about how to get them to take pills when they don't want. My Katy has been spitting out pretty much everything (pill pockets, chicken, pumpkin, and peanut butter), so we've been literally forcing 7 pills a day!

I just read about something to try that had never crossed my mind. I tried it, and it worked amazingly! She might be different at the next round, of course, but I wanted to share:

Marshmallow!!

I tore a normal size marshmallow into 4 sticky pieces and she ate one with no hesitation! I wrapped the remaining three around pills. She hasn't eaten ANY food today (terrifying), but she ate all 3 of them and then perked up her ears for more!

Brilliant, Jason! I used to use mini marshmallows for bait in the show ring for one of my dogs that wasn’t food motivated. She’d show for marshmallows though! I never thought of trying it for pills. Thanks for the tip! I hope it continues to work for Katie and you can get her eating.

I made the mistake of trying to mask a Dasaquin with a marshmallow, now she's spitting them out with a serious look of distrust in her eyes! LOL So tomorrow I'm going to have to give her several little ones throughout the day as a treat, and maybe not use it on the big chewables.

That’s a great idea Jason, I would never have thought of marshmallows! I have heard of using a straw on cup up pieces of hotdogs or cheese…the straw makes the slot for the pill. I’ve used yogurt and dumped the contents of the pill (capsule) into it but that only works if your dog will eat the yogurt.
You can also get a pill dispenser (a syringe type) but there are many out there that are a poor design but you could ask your vet f they carry anything…it may be of a better quality (or possibly you could return it if it doesn’t work.
