To walk or not to walk the neighborhood?

Hi,

We are adding a new little girl to our family on March 30th (she will be 8 weeks old). Currently we have Logan (9 months) and Piper (16 months). When we got Logan our vet cautioned us about walking him around the neighborhood until he had a number of vaccinations under his belt (so we waited). We got Piper in November (she was 1 year old) to be his canine life companion - they are devoted to each other. Piper was fully vaccinated so there was no issue.

Tragically Piper has stage 2 kidney disease (she is stable at the moment and a very happy little girl). Having been down this road with several of the cats we understand the prognosis too well. Hence the decision to add a third puppy (they both LOVE puppies and the more the merrier).

Here is our dilemma: Piper & Logan will be walking the neighborhood and visiting with their canine friends. Everybody (including the kitties) share the various water bowls. Odds are the puppy will be exposed to some sort of pathogen on some level even if we restrict her to the back yard. We would appreciate thoughts & opinions.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Fortunately she is small enough to carry. I wouldn't be letting her down to snip other dog urine etc but she can still get to meet people and see the world. I'm sorry to hear about Piper's kidney condition but hopefully she will give you a lot more time to enjoy her.

Yes, carrying her is a great idea. It'll only be for a little while.

Piper, we all hope you continue to be stable and thrive!

Tagg - Wonderful advice! We will be able to socialize her while protecting her.

Tagg & Chris: Thank you for your kind thoughts regarding Piper!

Many thanks,

Kimberly (Logan's & Piper's mom)
