Toothless Shelties

Back to Teeth...

Getting a little off track here, gang...I'm as guilty as you are!! Let's try to amble back to our tooth-challenged furkids :biggrin2:

When we got Gabe, he still needed to be neutered so I did a dental on him while he was sedated.

My vet refused to do a dental on Abby when I had her spayed just in case bacteria from her teeth got into her bloodstream which would have made her very ill. I know some vets over here will do a dental at the same time as neutering but a lot of them just won't take the chance.
It's not just that it would make more money for my vet having to get Abby in again, my vet is the best one in the area and she's not the most expensive one. When I got Abby I was told by the rescue that she needed her injections, when I told Audrey ( vet ) that she said at Abby's age she would assume she has a good immunity and would only give her the booster and not the full course. My vet is fantastic .

dentals

Wow, it does sound like you have a very good vet! In my case, Gabe was young and healthy with just a little tartar buildup. His gums were nice and pink with no sign of infection and no teeth needed to be extracted. We basically cracked off the tartar and polished those pearly whites.

Whever my older shelties have needed a dental, we've always started antibiotics several days before to help ward off any infection.

Anytime I have a dog go under I get their teeth done at the same time, especially with the older dogs.

I think its about balancing risk, and deciding what is right for your dog, of course!

Snowy Great idea

I never thought of that, But when they do need another procedure might as well do the teeth as well. But the best I think is to have the vet place the pooch on antibiotics first to avoid that possible transfer of bacteria to the bloodstream !

Chloe's has always been plagued with excessive tartar buildup. She's been on dry kibble for years, but she's never taken to chewing rawhides, Greenies, Kongs, or the CET chews. She just has NO chewing drive. So she gets a dental every other year, and yet she ends up with an extraction or two every time. Early on, I attempted toothbrushing, but she wanted no part of it and would get very stressed out. I hate putting her under, especially now that's she's 10 years old. Maybe the switch to the BARF diet will help her with that? Fingers crossed!

Trying Something New

I just ordered Leba III. It's an herbal Canadial dental spray that is supposed to remove tartar. It can be really expensive, but one bottle lasts for 240 sprays. I found a website with a sale -- $44 versus $60+ :eek2: I really, really don't want our girls anesthesized unless it's absolutely necessary, so I'm tryin gthis. I'll let you all know how it does.

Chris , How is the dental spray working ? Leba III. Have you ever tried that oxyfresh ? I'm trying to deside which will work the best with the fewest dental procedures as possible.

I had to take a break when everyone got the dog virus. I'm starting back up now. I had Annie Laurie's teeth done while she was being spayed, so she'll be a wonderful point of comparison.
