Toothpaste Suggestions?

Thanks for this post, I stopped in at the vet today to get some more enzymatic toothpaste and I saw the chlorhexidine rinse so I snapped up the last bottle ( I was surprised to see it on the shelf because I googled it and saw that it was only available with a prescription). The directions were to apply to the teeth with a toothbrush after brushing every day so Piper got his teeth brushed and rinsed, I need all the help I can get with his wonky teeth lol.
 
My vet recommended cet and my dogs love ve taste. But..... Although i find only positive reviews i thought my last sheltie had more tartar with it... Just a theory. Inused it with new puppy and auickly he had same breathe. Stopped using it and switched to another toothpaste and he doesnt love taste but the bad breathe disappeared. I Am wondering if partially just a weird sheltie thing as others live it .
 
I use these occassionally from Amazon 8in1 D.D.S. Dental Wipes

Haven't used them enough to notice cleaner teeth, however they work very well for getting rid of that cat poop breath.

At 4 1/2, I am just going to bite the bullet and bring him in for a professional cleaning, and then stick with the enzymatic paste and the pads for daily/weekly cleaning.
 
I love the idea of dental wipes - would be handy for those Kangaroo poop eating sessions. I never feel like the toothbrush cleans the front teeth well enough to clean off the poop. They always use their front teeth to pick up the poop and sheltie front teeth are so little. Might also be able to wipe down the stinky tongue.

I bought one of these and it took some time for me to decide whether I really wanted to use it. Dickens at three years old has beautiful teeth ... EXCEPT for some dark areas of buildup on all four canines. Not surprising, since of all his teeth, those are the ones he doesn't really use. But I tried the scaler after using enzymatic toothpaste for about a month, and the dark areas came right off with some very gentle scraping. He held perfectly still for it, so I'm sure it didn't give him any discomfort.
 
I brought the dental wipes, used them for a short time but the dogs were not happy. I showed my vet and she said you have to be careful about using them on dogs with any dental disease. If they have any redness in the gums, or build up then the chlorohexidrine will sting like hell.

Anyway, great idea from the vet was to use gauze rather than a toothbrush. Just wrap the gauze around my finger, put toothpaste on and brush that way. It is heaps easier.

Hi Caro, I'm really interested in giving this a try with my dogs. By gauze, do you mean something really soft, a bit like tulle?

I'm using light-weight medical gauze squares (the vet gave me heaps). But I think any cotton material with a bit of rough would be good - perhaps flannel, or terry towelling. When the medical gauze runs out I'm just planning on using an old face washer, cut into quarters to make it easier to wrap around my finger. Then I can wash it and re-use it, unlike the gauze that gets thrown out after one use.

I just brought the cat version and used it last night - and spent the morning cleaning up 3 lots of vomit. I guess it didn't sit well. But why-o-why, when there's mats all over the house and wooden floors in some rooms, do they have to throw up on the carpet!:rolleyes2:
