He had absolutely zero spark in his eyes. It was heartbreaking.
I've seen dogs like this in herding.

You are talking about methods. I am separating the action of the collar against the throat from how that action originated. My comment that all solid (non prong) collars apply the same pressure across the front of the throat when pulled is still true. I am not looking at how or why the collar gets yanked or what the training methods are. It's not relevant.
My dogs don't pull. So I can put whatever collar I wish on them, and they don't know the difference. I use martingales, and metal and nylon chokes. I have a pretty serious bias against head collars and harnesses.

So, if one doesn't 'need' it, why bothering to still use choke chains?
The choke collar is made of metal where a slip lead is usally made of nylon or the soft rope that most are made of and it is less stressfull on the dogs neck.OMG!!!
So even tho most of us in this thread ACTUALLY agree on the mentioned experience, isn't it amazing how we can disagree when it comes to the details!??
SO if you are getting people who are even way more fundamentally opposed to one another than us, can you imagine how difficult it gets to try and get a meaningful debate going on much bigger differences such as punitive versus positive enforcement, because we we as human beings all get defensive, lol
I highly doubt any one of us regulars on the forum is torturing our dogs, so perhaps assuming anything about a person just because of the collar they use on their animals is just plain silly. You know what they say about opinions...

Nobody said anything about any one of us torturing a dog?
I believe that training with (not wearing) a choke or prong collar works on the same principle as an e collar, that's all! So, what I AM saying is that compulsion training and punitive corrections are a thing of the past, it's just taking longer than we want it to![]()
