Training 'Olympia style'

So true!

I wanted to mention something that my trainer said that made a lot of sense when I was worrying about Enzo's jumping. She said to run a sequence in practice and if he drops a bar because of misjudging it (taking off too soon or too late, which Enzo kept doing!) have him run the same exact sequence again. If he adjusts his stride, or seems to "learn" from having crashed it the first time, then it's not a jumping issue! It's just them learning to judge the spacing. I thought that was really interesting. Obviously you can't do that in a trial but it really made sense to me!

learning to adjust strides...... Cran is still doing that..
but we got the Susan Salo jumping book earlier this year.
while he's not the perfect jumper- doing the adjustable stride grid has helped him immensely. it's helped his confidence and his jumping mechanics. I'd say that we still have a lot more work to do but I've been very encouraged by his progress so far:smile2:

the whole do the exact same sequence- I'm not sure that you can say it's not a jumping issue if they get it right the second time. Once Cran has done a sequence, he's much better the second time because he already knows where the bars are and what he needs to do to get over the jump......

That makes sense, and yep that is how it works with Sparrow, she only makes the mistake once.

We had a sequence of four jumps in a row last night and I was trying to gauge how Sparrow was jumping them - not easy when running! Well, I learned something, when Sparrow hits a sequence like that she spreads out and literally bounces over each jump without taking a stride in between:eek2: She would land and jump again without a pause for an extra pace. Now this explains why, if they are more spread out, she goes wrong, because she is taking off so soon and only just going over the jump. Mad spaniel!!!

I'll take a look at that, sounds like what Sparrow needs with adjustable grids:wink2:

Been looking for this for a couple days--I thought it was super interesting!

They both did great. Sparrow is something else! She put her whole heart and soul into it. Such a happy dog. I bet you could have asked her to do that course twenty times and she would just have kept going and giving it her all. Great spirit!
