Training techniques: Caesar vs. the rest???

CM has always been a hot topic on this forum. So putting his name in the title of the thread, means that he is the topic of the discussion. I would expect nothing less than a heated discussion of his training techniques.

If you want a thread that doesn't discuss CM, I suggest starting a new one, especially if your point is to focus on positive dog training.

CM is the complete opposite of positive and most of the people that would give you concrete, positive training tips probably are not even reading this thread because of the title you chose to use.

That's exactly it.
He didn't invent the wheel, he uses SOME common sense on occassion, of course, it's sorta like the monkey who will come up with a complete sentence eventually ;)
BUT for that you don't need to watch his show, or think you have to follow his training! You can go to a POSITIVE trainer and get a LOT of common sense advice and they will help you more than he ever will. He makes 'good' TV that's all. People need to go and find real Instructors who do the work and don't need to benefit of smart TV editing!

ALSO I would like to point out that we have come a long way since this thread, as I think a lot of us have done a lot more research and looked into finding better ways to relate to our dogs and become their guardian instead of their master... and are better for it.

Hasnt done it in probably a year now. My boyfriends moms pom/chi bites and he wont bite me or my boyfriend because we don't let him get away with it. grab him by the neck and yell at him. it works. a bad dog dosnt deserve proper training methods. i got spanked as i kid, i will spank my kids and my dogs.

Umm.... Hmm.... I feel like I have something to say but for now I'm speechless. Just, wowie?

it is kind of hard to tell a joke on the net sometimes. I think I would have laughed if it was not true for sooo many people:no:

please people... as if you have never hit a dog before. and even if you haven't, you know people who do. I know on farms, put a bullet in thier dogs head if it wanders off the farm. I personally know people who do this. And it makes me want to cry. Don't be so blind to reality. Its a dog. Its not the end of the world if you spank it for peeing on the floor, jeezus.

You have got to be kidding or trying to start a riot...right? I cannot believe what I'm reading.....

Im not sure what your referring to... but its all true... on the farms anyways. I know of 3 different farmers that have "put down" a few of their wandering border collies. Its sad, but when i see everyone freaking out over training techniques, I think we need to be reminded of these kinds of things and come back to reality. Its far from a perfect world, and everyone clearly has different "view" of what behavior techniques should be used, if any at all.

Just because you hit your dog, doesn't mean everyone else in the world has to or does. I don't. I haven't. I won't. There's simply no need to do violence on to others. To resort to that is to resort to irrational options fueled by emotions that actually do more bad than good. It's not training. Striking your dog out of anger for peeing on the floor is simply a lack of your control when you have yet to have taught your dog of the acceptable behaviors you expect in your household. All that teaches the dog is that they have an owner that can unexpectedly lash out and give hurt without warning. I would like to think your dog is more important than your flooring. If not, maybe that's where the disagreement stems.

Also, just because others around you abuse dogs, are you saying that's what justifies your actions? All I read out of your statement is "Well they're shooting their dogs over beside me, so why can't I JUST hit my dog? It's not as bad as them. Shooting and killing a dog is criminal, yeah that's so bad, but I only hit, choke, and scream at mine. It's not as bad as the reality next door so it's okay right?" No. To say your decisions are without fault, because of a few bad apples you know that are far worse than you, doesn't make YOU automatically right.

I definitely don't appreciate comments in threads that do nothing to contribute to an open discussion if you're going to come in here and say things like 'it's just a dog, jeezus' and put the assumption 'as if you have never hit a dog before'. A lot of people here, as I'm sure you would have known and can surely tell from being a regular member of this forum, consider their 'dogs' more than what you suggest we might. It's okay to make an opinion, I accept that you follow CM, but it's another thing to pass assumptions and judgments based off no facts about all other sheltie owners here on the forum and to generalize how we may or may not treat our dogs, how we may think or not think of our dogs, what is or is not the right way to train.

....

YOU tell ME that I am telling others that hitting is the right way? NEVER ONCE did i say that. Never once did i say everyone else in the world should hit thier dog, like you quoted me saying. That is what one of the things i do. YET you think you can tell me what im doing is wrong?!?! Am i missing something? What you are doing to me, is what your acussing me of doing. Im so confused.
