That baby sure was toooo cute.. still is.. just not a baby anymore. They grow sooooo fast!!

Yeah I had bought some just like that, just smaller at the local doggy expo! People more talented and patient than I had the homemade ones for sale.

Here is where I got my agility tugs from Genuine Dog Gear....
I find them all great! Currently I have the one with fleece and ball all in one
I want to buy some others now, too :)

I make tug toys out of my husband's old t-shirts. Buffy LOVES them and it's a good way to make use of t-shirts that we need to throw out/give away anyway. And they are free! :biggrin2: I just cut the shirt into strips, tie three together in a knot, and then braid and secure with another knot. If you want further details, I'm sure you can have fun with Google...

That sounds like a wonderful idea :):)

What a great idea on how to recycle t-shirts! I love it. Thanks so much for sharing this with us.

Tug Toys

I am curious as to why the dogs should not have a bin of toys to choose from all the time because that is what happens in our house? Mikos (1 yr) likes to bring out the stuffies and play tug with my 6 lb maltese X. Should I be changing how we play? I adopted a 2nd sheltie 2 weeks ago that is 6 and just retired from a show and breeding career and she doesn't seem to know what toys are all about. She will play soccer outside and will chase a squeaky ball outside but won't touch anything inside the house. This would be a good time to switch things up if I am going about it wrong, any advice gratefully accepted! Great links for tug toy ideas everyone, thanks.

I have two baskets of toys for the dogs in the house. It used to work great but over time the baskets have gotten over-filled and the dogs, I think, are overwhelmed with what to choose from.

I really need to cycle the toys around so that they become fresh. So, I agree have a bin works, but you have to keep it manageable for them.

I learned this from my agility instructor. This was told to me when Dandie was a few months younger and we were working on me forming a bond with her. The idea is so that the dogs look for people for their fun and release. While it is nice to be left alone, and have the dogs go get their toys and play by themselves, during the training process, it is good for the dogs to learn that "nothing in life is free." It builds a bond between the household members and the dogs. It also helps get the dogs attention when you need it, and therefore redirect bad behaviors.

I think that if you google "nothing in life is free dog training" you will probably get a lot of hits on this theory and may get some ideas regarding how to control the dogs toys.

Good question!

I do this a couple different ways. I have two bins of toys, but only one gets set out at a time. I rotate the bins every few weeks.

But, I also have a couple "special" toys that only come out at certain times (agility trials, when we travel, etc...)
