Update on California Rescued Shelties...

It is possible to be cruel by neglect, when a dependent is involved. It's not the same as direct cruelty, e.g., blows and hard words, but it can be cruel nonetheless.

The fact that the dogs seemed responsive to human care signifies that they weren't directly abused. Being dogs, they had no way of knowing just how badly they were being treated.
 
Now that I am home on a REAL computer . . . realize I don't trust AR extremists, or the legal system, or the media. However, what I do trust is the words directly from the volunteers who had hands on with the animals.

The news reports went from -- good shape -- to heavily relying on dental issues as reason for charging -- to now much health and husbandry issues that were appalling. I didn't want to see this person crucified without good reason. I didn't want the legal system or the AR extremists to trump up charges by grasping for whatever they could as a reason. I didn't want to jump to conclusions myself without hearing facts either. If the animals are indeed in such bad shape as this, then yes, charge with the kind of cruelty that is based in neglect -- if there is a way to differentiate from dog fighting, beating, lighting on fire kind of cruelty.

I don't in any way mean to say sweep it under the rug or turn a blind eye because of her personal problems. We have a responsibility as stewards of the animals in our care and she needs to be held accountable for her failings of that. Since there has been a long history with animal authorities with this person, that does make things worse. I haven't seen any other stories on this incident from other news sources and hearing further facts from additional links on this thread, of course there should be charges for cruelty based in neglect rather than cruelty based in out and out violence. I am so sorry for these dogs and I hope they all find homes to give them love and freedom and good care. I hope this person does not take on animals ever again, knowing she is unable to care for them properly. This is more extreme but like my Melli, a puppy mill discarded breeder, groomed and cleaned up inside and out by rescue, and given a home for the rest of her life where she is thriving and loved and pampered. I hope these 61 have justice and love.

Luckily Shelties are such a well natured breed. There was an earlier article where one official said it wasn't like other hoarding situations as the dogs had not developed a feral pack. But that's Shelties isn't it - even in adversity they are still a sweet natured dog.

I agree with you Eva, the saddest thing about this is the woman was meant to be a breeder and confirmation judge (tho it didn't say with what organisation). No one in a position like that should be mistreating dogs in this way. There is simply no excuse because she did know better and she had the support networks to help her.
 
I'm very sad now to hear the details of this case. :no: I really hope there is a way to verify the potential adopters are NOT friends of this lady. Can you imagine the energy, emotion, work and expense into getting these dogs cared for, and then they end up back where they started???? :mad:

I just pray they are all safely adopted into loving homes. I too thought "Wow, if not for the fire, these dogs would still be suffering".

I am so proud of the Sheltie folks who stepped in to help our beloved breed. Stay tuned to Southland Sheltie Rescue, in case any of the hard to adopt ones end up with them.
 
I read today on a Sheltie Owner FB page that an organization called Pilots for Paws has volunteered to fly these shelties anywhere in the Us that a good home can be found. There has been a lot of local interest, but it may be necessary to go out of state to place some of the more difficult to adopt dogs. I have no way of verifying this info., but it sounds great!

I'm with you Sharon. I hope AC has figured out a way to insure that these dogs don't end up back where they started.

Also, ditto on your pride for our fellow So Cal sheltie owners and breeders who stepped up and helped groom all of these beautiful babies!!
 
I saw these Shelties last Monday and I was saddened that they were in the condition they were in. I am happy to hear that they have all had medical treatment, been bathed and groomed and sheltie rescues and breeders came to help.
I was so sad for them, but by the time I got there each dog had at least 3 names on a list, and the shelter said they are going to be very particular to who they go to, that made me happy. I was impressed the facility it was very clean and more like a pet adoption place they have bonding rooms!
The vet Tech said that these dogs were just a step above being feral and it will require a lot of love and time to rehab them to live a normal quality pet life. I hope they all get that. They all, even in the messy state of appearance all had those smart Shelty knowing eyes! They will be better off and soon loving life with people who love them!
 
Any update on how these babies are doing? Did they all find homes? We are praying that they all get their wonderful forever homes...
 
The rescue ended up with 10 of the dogs. 9 were in pretty serious need of medical care. One was placed by the rescue. The ones that didn't come into the rescue were placed by the shelter. There really is no way to follow up on the ones placed by the rescue....that I know of. Hopefully they are all in loving homes tonight!!
