Update on Lady

I had that problem with Jazz my JRT mix. She lived her whole first year in a cage and got use to lying it it. I had her totally housetrained outside of the kennel and still had trouble with the kennel for several months. I tried a ex pen or just putting her in a small room but she was destructive. Over time, she learned she really liked to be clean so the behavior just stopped. In fact, she was so clean, her nickname was Princess Pillow Paws. OOh you mean I have to go out in the rain and mud. Yuck!.:rolleyes2: Just keep her clean and hopefully she'll like it.

BTW I don't know if it made a difference but I didn't use any bedding in the kennel. Jazz would rip it up into small pieces so if she went potty in the kennel nothing soaked it up and she had to deal with it. Poor girl.:(

Poor Lady. I i,agine since she was a puppy mill dog and never let out of her crate, using it as a bathroom was what she did. You may need to retrain her in that regards. The puppymill puppy I got always peed and poohed in the crate. It took a little time to teach him the house and crate were not the place to do these things. Puppymill dogs are so used to being in crates all the time, which explains why she seems content in her crate...they just do these things that always were considered "normal", to learn the actual normal routine.

Since all the dogs I have taken into my rescue were outside all the time regardless of weather or attacks by the native creatures. The dogs I take in are older or have a lot of medical issues, so they stay here until it is their time to pass It sometimes takes a long time to housebreak and show their true personalities, but it is so worth is

lady's problem may not be a physical one such as deafness, it may just be an emotional one . who really knows what happened to her in that puppy mill. some abused children stop crying because theym were harshly punished for it, maybe she does not bark because she was punished cruelly for barking.

My dear Kimmi and Marcus were breeding dogs who got shipped around a lot (both were champion show dogs). Unfortunately they were shipped off to places that allowed "neighbors" annoyed by barking to do what they felt was necessary to "keep the peace" Neither one barked until I got them and that was several months after I got them. They were constantly chastised and punished if they made noise. Kimmi suffocated her puppies because she feared if they made any noise they and she would be punished or harmed. Was horrible what these babies went through. Marcus is now gone, but Kimmi is 13 now and came to me when she was 5. She now is my barking and skittish pupper. Everything makes her jump and cower to this day

This morning I woke up to another crate full of poop. She seems to have had the runs, and it was all caked into her feet. So it was back up to the tub for her, and her blanket went back in the wash. I went home over lunch to check on her...we went for a walk, and she pooped some more. I remembered the discussions here about giving pumpkin, so when we got home, I gave her a spoonful of pumpkin mixed with a spoonful of plain yogurt. She LOVED that, and seemed to really enjoy her walk too.

It occurred to me though, that it could be the antibiotic for her broken nail that's making her have runny poops. The vet mentioned it, and I totally forgot until today. Duh!

I did learn from talking to the original group that rescued her, that the place where she came from kept their dogs in a shed or barn with straw on the floor, so at least she wasn't kept in a cage all the time! There was a group of 8-10 shelties that lived together, and then the place had other breeds as well. I'm sure though, that 10 dogs can make a lot of messes in the straw, so it still makes sense that she's used to laying in it!
