Update on Whisky's luxated patella (knee cap)

Well, after close to 2 months of babying Whisky's left rear leg (see http://www.sheltieforums.com/showthread.php?t=100 ), I called the vet since there was no real improvement. He confirmed Whisky would have to go under the knife, then would be recovering for 6-8 weeks.

However, about a week after that, we started seeing progress. He started running again, his knee would only pop out partially, as he was able to keep walking on it, and after two steps, his leg would be back to normal.
:confused2:

Sure enough, his weight being down from 30lbs to about 26lbs surely helped.

He's now doing better everyday. I'm so glad. I only hope it doesn't start again next winter...

Thanks!

I don't know if it's related, but we bought another puppy, a Labbe (Labrador/Beagle mix).

Dumb as a door nail, completely hyper, I really don't like him).

BUT...

He was roughing Whisky around, sometimes making his knee pop out in the process. By trying to run away from him, and playing around, I wonder if Whisky didn't improve his leg...

Glad to hear Whiskey is doing better. Hope it stays that way. What ever possed you to buy a Labbee ?? Labs are so hyper, and beagles are pretty good. Good luck with the new addition. I bet it's a cutie though. But not as cute as a sheltie.

Dasher says he's HAPPY FOR WHISKY !

Hello. Dasher's mom here (Tracy). he wants me to use my typing fingers cuz he doesn't have the right kind for this keyboard.
So glad Whisky is feeling better. Dasher is happy to be back to his crazy self also. I am sure everyone knows that Dasher just had surgery to remove a fatty tumor exactly one week ago. He has done great.
Losing weight really helps for the patella and hip dysplasia conditions. Not a cure but a relief on the areas involved.
Good luck and arf from Dasher.:biggrin2:

More update, for those interested.

Whisky is doing very well.

He runs all over the place, his leg seems A-OK! :biggrin2:

He never was much of a jumper, so that's out of the question to evaluate his condition (he probably always had weak hind legs and always will), but he's acting like he always did.

I'm ecstatic.

No surgery for him, and more quality time for us with him.

I'm keeping his portly azz on a diet tho :smile2: , until his weight goes down even further. I want him slim come winter time, to avoid a repeat of this.
