I can't imagine Hanna letting me do this. She never sleeps with her legs up in the air ( my previous shelties all did). The best I can do is lean her against me when I'm leaning against a cushion on the sofa and rub her belly - she will eventually settle like that but it's more like she's resigned to it as opposed to enjoying the position. I really think this started in training class when our instructor made us lie them on their backs and hold them that way until they stopped fighting it. I felt really uncomfortable doing that and she picked up on it I think. She lies on her side for grooming no problem and I just lift her leg to get at the underside.
I guess I was a little impatient in getting my girls to roll over on their back. I just gently roll them over then proceed with the needed tasks.
Piper has what I call an "innie hoo-hoo". (I must have missed a day in biology class). Her female part is inverted, which causes urine scald. So I have to wipe her down with baby wipes and apply diaper cream. She relaxes rather quickly, as the diaper cream soothes the area.
Daisy, has an infection in one of her back nipples, so I have to express it to release the infectious gook . . . she does not relax during this procedure.
She sleeps on her back a lot, but if I walk toward her, she will quickly roll over to protect her underside.
They always get some treats, so I don't think they totally hate me.
That is how I position Shelby so I can trim the fur between her toes. She never seemed to mind me rolling her onto her back, but she will not do it herself. She will roll over and play dead she just will not roll on her back.
