Urgh, tail chewing again

Over the last year Deska has chewed the fur off his tail on numerous occasions, for months he was on an elimination diet and that seemed to help a little. But now he's chewed the darn tail again.

He manages to do it every time I go interstate to see the family. On Sunday I'm flying to Melb for my dad's birthday. I'll be gone 13hrs and had organised for my neighbour to take them out to toilet and then feed them at about 4pm. She has her sister visiting so she can't spend long with him. I'm worried he will chew his tail more with the stress of my being gone (he gets separation anxiety). I can wrap it but he's likely to chew the bandages and I don't want to cone him for that long. I just don't know what to do.

On top of that the whole tail chewing thing has got me at a loss. I'm pretty sure it's because he is boot scooting and scratching up his tail. But I don't know why he is scooting.

I'm going nuts:gaah Why is he doing it, and what am I going to do with him on Sunday.

Caro, have you had his anal glands checked to see if they are behind the scooting...possible infection or impacted?

As much as you may not want to put a cone on him for the length of time you are to be gone, it might be better than having him really damage that tail. No easy answer on this one.
