just had my 8 yr dog cody yearly check and he has lost 1 kg over 2 yrs he is now 7.5 kg eating and drinking fine. Vet did urine dip stick it was fine for diabetes but had protein in it and suggested he has more in depth urine test at the lab. She worried me a bit because she was talking about a special diet if protein is too high. She did say as they get older they do get a few urine problems as humans do. Has anyone else had similar problem

High protein in a dog's urine can sometimes be related to kidney issues. Having a full blood panel done would give you a better dx of what is really going on and if there is something that indicates treatment or diet change.

Do get the blood panel ASAP. It could be kidney disease. If caught early, it can be manageable. We lost Cody to kidney disease. It was discovered late, and despite our best efforts, he only was able to battle for four months. Check out dogaware.com It is loaded with very useful information that will help on your future path with your dog.

Shelby had protein in her urine too. All her lab work was normal so they drew a sterile urine sample by drawing it out if her bladder with a needle.

The sterile urine sample came back completely normal. To this day we have no idea why the office sample kept coming back positive for protein. Spoke with a vet dietician who said that it could be possible the food we had her on used poor protein sources and she was just excreting it.

But do get all the tests done so you can find out what is causing the protein, the sooner you get answers the sooner you can treat it.

Hope everything turns out OK.
