USDAA Jump Height Study

An 18" height would be interesting. Koji jumps very lovely at 18". Maybe it's because he's almost 18" tall. lol. We did try 22" and it was bad, VERY bad. I mean, he could clear it, but could you imagine how slow we'd be and how bad it'd be on his joints after awhile?

Here's hoping USDAA decides on a nice change.

Ortegah: you mentioned running against BC's in the 16" Performance height. If they brought in 18" how would this change anything? Or were you thinking maybe they'd start to jump 20". I'm confused. I figure, they'd still jump the same thing as you.

Most of the border collies are bigger than 18". Right now anything up to 21" can jump 16" in performance, so a 21" border collie could and does compete against us.

very interesting.
could you make a table for me, how the jump heights are in USDAA and AKC for me?

here in Germany we've got the regular heights of the FCI.

so dogs like my face (15") have to jump in medium sized category 16" to 18". depends on the competition and judges can choose on their own, which high they want that day.

dogs with minimum 17" have to jump 23" to 25".

USDAA Championship Jump Heights
12" or less: 12"
16" or less: 16"
21" or less: 22"
Over 21": 26"

There is also the Performance program where your dog can jump one jump height below where they measure. So the heights are 8", 12", 16", and 22"

AKC is the following:
For dogs 10" and under at the withers: 8" jump height
over 10" and under 14" at the withers: 12" jump height
over 14" and under 18" at the withers: 16" jump height
over 18" and under 22" at the withers: 20" jump height
over 22" at the withers: 24" jump height
Other jump divisions: Dogs over 22” may be entered in a 26” jump class at the owner’s discretion. Also some small breeds may be allowed to enter a “preferred” 4” class. Older dogs may also be entered into “preferred” classes for lower height jumping.

And yikes, I will never run FCI. I couldn't make Koji jump 22" in USDAA, no way I'm jumping him 23-25. wow, that's high for a 17" dog.

So what you're saying is.......you hope USDAA cuts the height off at 18"? So that the BCs will have to jump something higher, while you can jump 18"?

I don't feel they'll have a 16-18-22 levels, but I guess we'll have to wait and see. In any height where Koji is, there's too many Aussies around here who are as fast or faster than some BC's (along with those darn cattle dogs too), so I know we'll never be a fast "sheltie" with his height....even if he was as fast as Trax.

thank you both!

so there are less jump categorys in FCI (only 3) and the dogs have to jump "overall" higher. am I right?

your system would definitly more interesting for several competitors over here, which doesn't have "typical" agility dogs.

and how is it handled with the world championship team? do they just practice at the hights of it? and which highs are laid at the qualifications for the worlds?

No, I'd really prefer that Trax could jump 16", but overall I think they shouldn't have a 6" difference in there. What's wrong with just 8, 12, 16, 20, 24? That way its all just 4". There's no extreme jump from one to another. I'd jump him again at 20" even if I had to. Trax jumped 20" in AKC for years, but 22" is just asking too much over the long term.

Not 100 percent sure but in AKC if you are on the world team dogs that jump 12 have to jump 14 inches and 16 inch dogs have to jump 18 inches and again I am not sure on the other heights.I know for sure on the 12 and 16 inch heights as my dog was doing the ISC classes and was getting ready to tryout for the world team.

If it were up to me I'd say no dog should have to jump higher than it's actual height. i.e. whatever the jump heights are your dog would jump the closest under the height of the dog.
I would hope any adjustment would not mean eliminating 16" & introducing 18" just to reduce the difference to jumping 22" to 4", because then you would have more dogs from the existing 16" class being asked to jump higher.

In a more ideal world, I wouldn't use the withers as the measurement of the dog, but instead the distance from ground to sternum. That way the short leged breeds will be given a better height & the long legged dogs would have their advantage over others in their current height categories removed.
