use of bitter apple to curve barking

In the Agility classes I've been in, they use Binaca for excessive barkers. Most dogs don't need to get more than couple of shots of it before they decide to control themselves.

This is what they do in our classes as well. Binaca or the listerine spray.

I have also heard of the Bitter Apple, but have not seen it used myself.

What's Binaca? And how is this used? As a spray? To the face or mouth? Does it taste funky or something?

Binaca is a spray for people used to make their breath smell yummy

Most dogs do not like the taste of the minty fresh breath spray:eek2: and choose to keep their little mouths closed after getting a squirt.

I sold a puppy who watches the mouse on her owners laptop. If she runs the mouse to the side of the screen, the dog gets up to look behind the computer to see where it went. When I was watching the 2x2 Weave video, my dog stood there with his front paws on the tv stand to watch it. So I don't know what they see, but they certainly see something.

I would be inclined to remove her from the room. If you can baby-gate the room off somehow, then when she barks, just pick her up and remove her. Let her back in 5 minutes later. If she barks, remove her again. Don't talk to her, just bark-and out. As long as she is quiet, she gets to stay.

The more you react, the more she will
the more you get flustered the more she will

For example, I anticipate Toffee barking at the toothbrush... I get cranky before I even pick it up... now I turn on the faucet... reach for the toothpaste and voila... he starts!Same with the smoke alarm, goes off fairly often as it is too close to kitchen... I rush around and am upsedt that it goes off, have to open windows and wave the towel at the alarm... teh dog has a FIELD day with that one!!!

I have tried a LOT of methods but the best one yet is to TRULY relax myself, believe it or not... the more I rushed around to get a hold of his snout or telling it was mine or whatever I used at the time.. the worse it got!
again MY fault, lol

So I end up taking deep breaths before I brush my teeth and ignore him, and just stand there and he seriously only huffs a couple of times and then walks off, same with the mixer, vacuum cleaner and even smoke alarm!!!
The are so darn in-tune with us, it is SCARY!
I would NEVER use a spray, because it would compound the problem in my experience... gets the dog hyped up, and a reason for barking because he WILL anticipate something bad to happen and voila everytime you spray you convinced him that he had a reason for barking

I tried the squirt bottle with water and she thinks its a game. She tries to catch the water as I squirt it.

I thought I was the only person who had a dog that does this! Barkley LOVES to be squirted, so this was a no-go from the start. He also barked harder at the pennies-in-a-can shaking, so we gave that up too. About the only thing I haven't tried is the holding the snout. Of course, I have to catch him first....he also loves to run and bark....:rolleyes2:

Bailey is the same as Barkley. She likes being squirted by water and also barked at pennies in a can. She wanted to play with it. Bailey is not afraid of loud noises.

LOL ! Barkley and Sandstorm would have so much fun together! I won't even try the pennies in a can, I know he would bark more! I tried capturing his snout as he ran by me after barking at the T.V.- he just sneezed.

I'm telling ya, at this point, grabbing Megan's snout is about the only thing that works. It takes consistency everytime they even look alert or begin to grunt before barking, you try the index finger and a stern NO BARK, then if you have to grab the snout.

Squirt bottle didn't work (on her back OR chest, even her face from a distance), just aggravated her, loud noises egg her on...Then I met this long time Sheltie owner, he said grabbing of the snout was the most effective for his furbabes..

Try it, there smart, they'll learn! :smile2:
