What Will Happen If I Refuse Rabies Shot/Don't License?

Hello fellow Sheltie lovers, (I'm in S.California here) I am worried because my eight-year-old Sarah gets very sick whenever she gets a rabies shot. It scares me. She will eat and there is not vomiting or siezures (yet.) I am describing what happened last time. She gets a 3-yr. shot here. She is very lethargic and sleeps a lot and looks sick and miserable. It is the sickest I ever see her. Does anyone know what will happen if I don't get her the rabies shot? I won't be able to license her because they ask for proof of the r. shot. Then what happens? I am willing to pay a fine if I can afford it. Thanks for any help. I am not used to breaking the law.

My last dog Dow never had a license or shot. BUT he also was not in an area that was exposed to a lot of wildlife or other dogs. It is not just about the law it is also about your dogs health. Have you asked your vet about the reaction? Maybe there is alternatives that might not affect her as much.

I would suggest talking to your vet, and talking to whoever heads up the licensing in your county and explain that your dog gets sick from the shot, and find out if titers pulled by your vet proving your dog is still immune would suffice in place of the shot.

I don't know where you are in CA, but there was a case recently in Chino Hills. A family didn't want to vaccinate their dog because of immune deficiency disease. Inland Valley Humane Society was unbending on the issue. It went to the state courts and still they were required to vaccinate (for rabies). They could not get a pass from their vet even though it was extremely dangerous for this dog to be vaccinated.

My jurisdiction doesn't allow for medical, at all. If I only had one dog, and wasn't otherwise violating licensing, and had money and time to burn, I would have a Kansas State or DoD Rabies titer pulled and send that with the vet note in in lieu of the Rabies vaccine. I would do this planning to lose. :smile2:

The person I know who had the same problem reported the dog dead to the county, and never vaccinated him again. There are inherent risks in that as well, because if the dog bites and has no "recent" vaccination, regardless of titer, they will probably quarantine the dog, possibly euthanize it.

It's too bad the laws are based on fear, and not science. Look how hard we had to fight for three year Rabies, even though the science is solid.

ClantyreSheltie outline the issues with not vaccinating well. Depends on your state and licensing area. If something happens(bite) you put your dog in a very precarious position legally.

I would suggest you talk with your vet about premeding her with benadryl usually if it is the reaction is as you describe they don't have an issue if premeded. Her reaction is not that atypical unfortunately. I get vaccined for Rabies too as part of my job and I had the exact same reaction on the 2nd booster. Sleepy and sore for several days. Benadryl is a life saver. Fortunately my titer has been though the roof for the last 6 yrs.
