Velcro dog Or anxiety

over the past few weeks I have noticed that Pippi, who is now 10 months, has begun to wing and cry whenever I am out of sight. This can be just behind the baby gate or when I am In the bathroom. I am beginning to worry that this may be causing her a lot of stress and that is the last thing I want. Any tips on what I can do? Would having a companion dog be beneficial?

Can you give her a kong with a bit of peanut butter or cheese in it to distract her? She is very young still and may grow out of it!

I would try distractions first and see how that goes...

I sure others will provide good directions...

As I posted on another thread, my 1st sheltie was very visual...she needed to KNOW where I was or she got uneasy to the point of pacing, or if I was outside and she knew it and couldn't get to me, there was howling. So to curb her need to be there, I use to tell her I was leaving and I would say go lay down, in her bed was a treat. Somehow she got the concept, and as long as she was told I was departing, she didn't act out...with the pups now...I give them a dixie cup with small treats in their beds...they see me to the door, and then I tell them go get your treats, and they do, and they settle down. Kaleigh had issues with my leaving before I got Savannah, she would whine and cry, she was 8mths when it really started to be an issue, and up to 10 mths when Savannah joined us. She stopped completely when Savannah came, she was a huge distraction for her. Savannah was the focus, and she guarded her new playmate. Now Savannah is having issues with my departures at certain times, I hear her bark, and it is a distinctive bark like TAKE me, don't LEAVE me here. But she does quiet down within a minute...she is almost 11 mths...this just started, hasn't occurred before. I think it is a timing thing...pups needing a bit of reassurance at this phase...

Lil' Lady has always been a clinger and since we went through our turmoil
of problems, she follows me everywhere. When I leave I put the radio on
give her a treat and tell her I will be back.

I think one of the best advice given awhile ago is to ignore. I forget who
suggested that but hugs to then. Lil' Lady is unreal sometimes, and I don't
give in to her demands all the time. Shelties are very smart, they know how
to get your attention.

I agree with Sable. They definitely know how to manipulate you. At least Shelby does.

Shelby will whine, bark, cry etc. just to see if you will give into her wants and needs. And she can be very persistent. If you ignor Shelby long enough (sometimes it is hard) she gets the hint that this behavior does not get her what she wants and she will stop and go lay down. I never give in when she does this, but DH is a different story LOL.

She also will bark like a crazy dog if you leave the house without her. Even outside for one minute. With Shelby it is not anxiety it is just her telling you she is angry that she is not going along. She stops barking as soon as the door is closed. To avoid this we now give her a treat when we leave, and then she does not make a sound. She eats her treat and probably goes to sleep on the sofa.

Tara's heart gets broken every day when I have to leave her to go to work. And when we come home, if we don't get inside quickly enough, the howling begins.

I'm not sure what you're feeding her, but can you give her a Kong filled with a frozen mixture of (insert whatever you feed for breakfast) to distract her?
