Last night at the park Iris and I ran into a Shiba Inu that was very, euh, exhuberant to say the least and Iris got into an intense herding mode like Ive never seen before she was being very growly and she almost sounded aggressive and was really trying to nip him, a lot more ferociously than usual. Is it normal for shelties to get like this when trying to herd crazy "sheep" ? The Shiba Inu's owners who have a sheltie also really didnt seem alarmed whatsoever at this behaviour but Im just wondering seeing as she never gets like this with any other dogs? Or did she just maybe think he was a dumb*$$ who needed serious herding because he was running circles around her ?

I havn't had either of my dogs near sheep but ducks, chickens, horses, etc. . . and most of the time they are usually happy workers, never had any growling except when strangers approach the animals

yeah it was weird shes never done it before, and has yet to do it again ... maybe she was just didnt like him for some reason ! oh well maybe she was pms-ing haha

The nipping might be initiating the bitey game. Mine are always doing it when they get excited around other dogs. Now that I think about it, most of the dogs we play with nip each other when excited - esp if the other dog is a crazy young thing and friendly.

If the Shiba was being vocal, she may have been imitating him. I was at the dogpark with Maddie and she was playing with a very vocal pup, and she became very vocal, barking and running and sparring and barking.

Later some other dogs came and they were all barking and howling, and Maddie felt she too had to join in. She did not look stressed or scared or angry, just wanted to be "part of the crowd" I guess.

As long as the play signals were clear and your dog wasn't showing signs of fear or aggression, etc... then it was probably just your dog matching her play to the Shiba.
