Having 20 dogs itself does not concern me. Timber's breeder had 13 at the time that I got him. But these were all show dogs, or training to be show dogs. Which means she was always breeding to bring out the best in the breed, and careful about not perpetuating the bad stuff.
While awfully cute (what Sheltie isnt'??!!), the dogs on the webpage are not show dogs. So yes, while not necessarily a puppy mill, it does point to a BYB. They may not be putting enough due diligence into what they are breeding.
I would be cautious. If they do not insist on meeting you, do not present you with the contracts that OntarioSheltie mentions, I would walk away. I'm sorry if this is not what you want to hear.

The responses I got, although maybe not want I wanted to hear, it is definitely what I NEEDED to hear. It's so easy to get caught up in the cute, fuzzy, doggie in the window; but for all parties concerned (well, maybe not so much the breeder) I want to be sure I'm doing the right thing for myself, Pogo, and the future puppy (or dog).
I decided against this breeder because my "spidey senses" were tingling.
I talked to a new friend I made who recently purchased a pup from a breeder and she told me where they got theirs. I contacted the breeder and while they didn't have what I wanted (in my situation, I would like an older puppy-I can't do the 8 week old puppy thing), through breeder networking, they put me in contact with a breeder in Athens, AL who has a blue merle that is 4 mos old. Although this phone call was the initial "do you still have the pup" and other super basic question call, I am considering driving down there and seeing the puppy.
With OntarioShelties great post, I can be prepared and know what to ask and what to look for.
She did tell me that the Merle male has dual eye colors. Should that be a concern for me and shelties?

my bi- blue has an eye like that! 1 eye is completley blue the other is half brown and half blue. it is pretty cool looking. its usually called merle eye. their is now problems with his vision.

And just so you all know...you got me doing on thinking about getting another pup for company for Bacca!
So I just happened to find a good breeder in my area that has a 7 month old female available.
So I sent the email.....
I'm not sure whether to thank you guys or not!

I emailed the breeder and she was nice and answered all my questions. She seems to be a reputable breeder. I know I overwhelmed her with questions about the puppy. I think I may have offended her with all my questions. I'm sure she was thinking she wasn't going to put in all this time answering questions to a casual inquirer.
Does anyone think that another puppy will help my Pogo come out of his shell? The prospective pup is very outgoing and hoping that his outgoing nature will encourage Pogo with his shyness issues.

ooo barb keep us posted on a possible new furbaby in the house. Oct. 4 has to come already... I can't wait to find out if the breeder I am talking too, her princess is prego. They are doing X-rays on that day to determine if she really is. I am so nervous and hopeful its killing me. I want a new furbaby sheltie.

Merle Eyes
Rasha, my blue merle has both of her eyes merled. The left one more than the right but her vision is great. Because the breeder was breeding her, she had her eyes certified. I guess that is what I would ask the breeder if you are concerned about the merle eyes...... were the parents eyes certified? Good Luck!

Pogo, the spelling errors and the number of dogs they have would worry me.
I personally know a collie breeder who has 40 collies not counting the litters. (actually i used to be her kennel help for a couple of years!) They are actually reputable in every sense of the term, other than there dogs are outside in runs/kennels. They are very nice runs, and the dogs have all of there testing and this lady is smooth collie breeder of the year for like.... 5 years! Tons and tons of champions, and although there are a crap load of dogs, they are very even tempered and sweet. you could never tell they were undersocialized. BUT that doesnt matter to me if someone has so many dogs and they are kept outside. That is just not right.

As for me, the breeder emailed me back. It turns out her pups are distantly related to Bacca - with only a few good breeders in the area, I guess they are becoming quite incestuous!
The breeder is suggesting that I bring Bacca over to meet her girl who is just a little older to see how they get along.
I'm getting cold feet....doesn't help that David (my weekend spouse) thinks it's a terrible idea, so I'm not getting alot of support.
What do you all think...is two twice the work of one?
