Wanting another Sheltie

I honestly have no idea b/c I have never had two at a time. I have only heard stories from certain people. Many have told me that two are easier than one or more than two. b/c they tire eachother out when it comes to playing and less for us the Pet Human having to worry about.

I have 3 shelties and will be getting my daughter her own sheltie! she already says she wants a sable so if it was me I would say go for it! my husband on the other hand would probably side with your husband, men!!! to be honest though as much as he complains Eric loves the shelties and they even sit on his lap! and I have caught him feeding them from his plate

Hey now...take it easy on us guys! I actually talked my fiance into getting Max a rescue Sheltie companion after we move into our house in March. Especially after seeing Max play with his new Sheltie buddie Dakota at the dog park. Max weighs 17 lbs at 4 months vs. Dakota weighing 14 at 2 years.

I personally cannot imagine life with just one sheltie anymore. I have 9 and yes it is a LOT of work. Because each pupper has such a distinct personality and each loves one on one time it can be overwhelming at times. The hardest thing for me is I am disabled and very tired much of the time (I am in kidney failure), but these guys keep me active and my mind off my medical issues. Having more then one for me means that if I am exhausted they have each other to be with. Maizie is very protective of her much older sister Shanjen. Shanny has some medical issues and when she is not feeling wll Maizie will stay close to her and act like her protector. I am not recommended multiple dogs for everyone. It is a commitment and a lot of time grooming, training and such...but for me it is so worth it

For us, Layla added so much joy that we wanted to make sure that we had more! Adding Annie was just one of those things. Brad saw her picture and "knew" she was his dog. Three is a good number for use -- everybody has one.

As for me, the breeder emailed me back. It turns out her pups are distantly related to Bacca - with only a few good breeders in the area, I guess they are becoming quite incestuous!

The breeder is suggesting that I bring Bacca over to meet her girl who is just a little older to see how they get along.

I'm getting cold feet....doesn't help that David (my weekend spouse) thinks it's a terrible idea, so I'm not getting alot of support.

What do you all think...is two twice the work of one?

Ah, bad news! The breeder just emailed to let me know that someone else just picked the pup!

Oh, well. David will be thrilled! Me on the other hand am gonna keep looking!

Kept looking and found success! The breeder seems reputable but I need to some homework. She is clearly a show breeder, that is a given.

She has 4 potential furkids for me: a 1 year old male blue, a 5 month male sable and a couple of girls about 4 months.

Question: Is it easier to mix two neutered males or mix "fixed" females/males together.

Congrats Barb, on finding a new furkid.

I am not at all jealous of you. As far as what combo works, I think the biggest part is how they are raised. And is Bacca a more submissive or does he have alpha male tendencies? Females and Males can be a bad mix if the female tends to be bossy.

If possible, bring Bacca with you to see which ones he gets along better with. If the breeder will let you, separate each potential pup and let them spend like 5 min. together to see how they interact-you may be surprised!

I've still been looking tirelessly, and can't find any from a reputable breeder. Everyone I ask either says they don't have any or yes I have some, they cost "x" amount and you can come pick them up anytime-no questions asked.

I actually had one to say they had one she was willing to place, but it's a hard luck, extreme shyness case. She would give her to me in exchange for promising to spay her. I wish I could've said yes, but I already have my shy Pogo and I didn't need two fearful dogs fighting over the same corner to hid in. Maybe I would've said yes if I was successful with Pogo.

Oh well....still looking.... Good luck Barb!! Any potential StarWar names? Leia? Wicket (the ewok)? Jabba? Skywalker? Obi? etc..etc...

We've had good luck with the male/female (both neutered) mix, Barb, except that I've found that both our males try to overpower the females in play which, unless your female is an alpha, can really back off the girls. Currently Barkley, who was supposed to be Pixie's boy toy, terrifies her and has since the day we brought him home 18 months ago. He just plays too rough for her princess demeanor, so she will run and hide. I've never had two males at the same time so someone else can probably speak to that.

I will say, though, that two Shelties of whatever gender is SO much better than one!! You will not be sorry to have multiples. Good luck and happy puppy shopping!! Oh, and as far as the guys go...I've gotten every single one of our pets when The Husband has been away, traveling, or just out. He's always said nonono, right up until I was leaving the driveway, and once they're here he is the biggest softie who loves them as much as I do!

Well, that's just perfect as Hubby is in Halifax this weekend, and Bacca and I have an appointment on Sunday to meet the pups!

Pogopup - good suggestion to let them play individually to see who interacts best with him. Bacca is definitely not shy, but I'm not sure if he's quite alpha male either. (I like to think of him as very well-adjusted - except for the pant leg chewing thing! Too bad I didn't do as well with my teenagers! )

Good luck, pogopup! Apparently, you just need to come to Canada to find a Sheltie! While I thought there were only 2 good breeders in my area, I've just discovered 3 more! One actually responded back saying he had only babies, but have I tried "so and so"!? Amazing.

Where do you live anyway? One of my Ottawa breeders that I encountered co-breeds with a breeder in North Carolina - Jubilee Shelties. It seems that alot co-breed even at pretty far distances.
