Weave Analysis

Just my two cents.......

I think you're doing great! I would rather my dog decel going in and have proofed awesome weaves, versus my dog NOT decel going in and missing his entries constantly.

I honestly believe that with time, you'll see more foot speed and faster entries.

Unless the dog is big enough to push poles out of the way, or small enough to not need to, I would think all dogs need to decel to get in. I've never seen a dog, who's running full speed not decel going into the weaves.

BTW, love Starr's weaves. I think they look great. And I really do think time and experience will create speed. If you look at Koji a year ago (maybe 1.5 yrs), he's slower than he is now. But I love his weaves now, he may not have distance or proofing, but he's pretty darn solid and fast! Well, way faster than before, maybe not fast like BC's or super fast Shelties.

Sorry - I didn't realize there had been additional posts on this thread!

When coming on speed dog has to rock back on haunches properly because of the stepping over/leaning forward motion on weave entry. I would suggest getting just one set of 2x2 and training on different surface just entry, start slower and closer and increase. It might be just the flooring and learned pattern. If he has difficulty finding the footing, Susan Salo bend grids are very helpful for dogs that need to figure out which leg feels better as lead leg. I would put colorful vet wraps around dew claw area of each front leg and set camera low so you can see movement clearly. speed and angle.

Thanks for the suggestions SheltieChe. We will definitely going back to working weave entries this winter.

Thanks K9Kreationz - your comment made my day :-). I agree with you about prioritizing awesome weaves with a slight decel as opposed to a dog missing entries. I have to remind myself that he's only 2.5 years old - we've got tons of time to keep working :-).
