Weave Training

I'm not sure if it could help you, but I taught my dog 2x2, too. He's understood this just well and did great, BUT as he's not that experienced if I rushed too ahead or moved too aside, just did any sudden move, he'd skip the pole as well. I can be quite far away, but he still needs some kind of stability from me. Total independence comes w/ time and different exercices. :smile2: One of my fave articles on weaves - once you get your dog working on all twelve poles w/ you, this is what i'd try out http://fastforwarddogsports.com/wp-.../articles/Reprint_NailDownYorWeaveEntries.pdf

Oh thank you so much! This will really help as I did some more training last night and found exactly as you mention that sometimes the pole skipping seems to be as a result of where I am positioned.

Thank you everyone for all your suggestions. I am really excited to carry on our training now!

ohhhh, this is a GREAT link!
That's a good few days worth of training right there :D

I'm really happy that this article could be useful to anyone else. I think it's amazing starting point for weave proofing and maybe it's all it takes. If your dog is able to do these little exercises, then he probably understands weave poles well :smile2:

Yep. You should try to remain calm and stable w/o sudden change of speed or jerking yourself around, lol. As I understand just like my dog, yours is also unexperienced and just trying to learn how to weave, so it's really the best not demand too much at the beginning until he knows what weaving is about. Once he will do6 poles w/o skippin, you can try run ahead a bit or some kind of exercises described in the article. I might be wrong, tho. That's just what I tried to do and it helped my dog. :wink2: Also when I wanted my pup to look more ahead instead of at me, I didn't throw toy myself, but I put it at the end of weaves, so he'd pick it up when finished... it made him move more independently and looking ahead instead of watching me all the time. Hope it'll help.

Well, I have been working on the exercises descirbed in the article and have been having great success. I think I pinpointed the problem to having too much reliance on my position and movements. As soon as I started to work a send into the weaves he has been performing beautifully with no problems. It seems he was watching for me as he was in the weaves and if I slowed, sped up or moved my hands it would cause him to pull out towards me and skip the pole. I am hoping that by continuing to work the exercises he will start to complete the weaves no matter what I am doing. Thanks everyone for your help!

Yay! I'm glad you figured it out. I was also the reason why my dog skipped the pole... I guess that it's quite common. Our criteria were probably too difficult for young dogs... tho, I also think these exercises should help w/ weave proofing. I'm gonna try them out tomorrow. My pup knows some of these already, but as you mention send - that one has been probably the hardest for him. :wink2: So I still have a lot to work on, too. Though, in this week's class he surprised me, because he managed to do really hard weave entry :biggrin2: let's hope our shelties will master this in no time.
