We're doing tracking - yey!

One thing I like to do before teaching tracking formally, is toss a small handful of kibble to scatter in a fairly large area (think big hula hoop) and let the hungry dog use its nose to find it. While they are eating the kibble, I give them a good 'low key' good "find-it" "track-it" or "search"

They also seem to like scavenging (searching) for their dinner.

I'll do this outside in the yard, and all across the living room floor. Once they get it, it also keeps them busy for several minutes as they make sure every kibble has been found. :biggrin2:

That's Deska's favourite game. He knows 'find it' to look for treats - we do it at our local oval sometimes when all the dogs are pestering me for treats (they know I have good ones to stop Mr D chasing cars) - Deska's gotten very good at searching them out before the others. And of course they have a treasure hunt for breakfast when I go to work. Haven't done that in a while though so maybe we will have one tonight!

Tracking over, and boy are we both exhausted. Met lots of people, Deska played with a lot of other dogs and ate chicken so I know he loved it.

Deska's first track got him quite a few laughs - silly boy. The dogs had to track their owners so we would go off and hide in the long grass while the dogs sniffed us out. Of course the gun dogs loved flushing out prey from the grass. But Deska let the sheepdog in him out - he saw a grey thing on the ground, barked, growled and circled it like a threat. Only the grey blob was me! Lucky he worked that out on the next couple of tries. Because the owners are hiding you dont get to see how your own dogs are going, but now we have done it a few times we will try some 'sock' tracking. And I will put up a seperate post explaining what we did in case anyone want so try it themselves.
