what collar size?

Hiya! I am new here, and want to prepare for my sheltie puppy I will be getting mid-late next year (fingers crossed)
I am gathering as many items as I can together well in advance so I know all I need to do when the time is right is order his food and go and collect him. I am in the uk, so I am not able to get some of the ones available in america or other country's unless ebay has it!

what size collar should I get?

I really like the martingale collar's and I would like to use one for him.
I would like him to have it from a puppy, I will be crate training, but wont let him have it on in the crate, but will put it on for a little while every day to he gets used to it, and start lead training indoors untill he can go outside.

the sizes on ebay are

  • Large ..........collar size... 20"-24" ...material width is 25mm (1")
  • Medium.......collar size ...13"-20" ...material width is 20mm (3/4")
  • Small...........collar size ...10"-13" ...material width is 15mm (1/2")
  • Extra Small..collar size ... 8"-10" ...material width is 15mm (1/2")
I am happy to order one for adult size, and one for puppy size, I know that shelties vary a lot in size, but if i have a puppy up to say mid-late teething size, then one from then on that I can adjust as he grows.

My parents springer spaniels wear a rolled leather collar 24/7 but they have clip behind the head haltie collars and martingales that are used when going on walks.
I dont plan on my little man wearing his 24/7 I don't want to ruin his ruff, plus I dont want to chance him catching it on his crate.

I am really excited that the time I can get my dog is getting closer and closer, I have been reading puppy and dog books since I was knee high!
I will be a fair but firm pack leader-mummy and cant wait!!

The collar you use on a puppy will not fit an adult so you will have to buy one for when it comes and one for later. Probably the medium one will fit. Tinsel is 15" and 22 lbs and wears a 14" collar. It adjusts to fit my westie and even my Belgian Tervuren so there is a lot of wiggle room.
Glad to hear you won't be leaving it on all the time. It's a bug with me but I do understand why many people are loathe to take them off.
Have a lovely Christmas yourself and hope the puppy you get will be everything you've been waiting for.

I know he will need a big collar as an adult, but if a small on a tighter setting be ok whnlen a bring him home then i can make it bigger as ge grows, i think the springers have a medium mostly expanded nearly full size, so i think it should fit him as an adult even as a big boy :D
Im glad your collar fits all the dogs with just a slight adjustment, thats what i think is better about this sort of collar compared to a fixed leather wone :)
My family have always kept the collar on, but i dont want to for safety and to help his fur :)

I would not invest in collars until your pup is at least two years old. Or at least make sure that the ones you get are highly adjustable. I went through 3 collars until Bacca got to full size. Two were regular collars, and one was a martingale.

I finally settled on a custom martingale (collar no. 4). It is only about 1/4" braided and rolled kangaroo leather. Perfect for a Sheltie. It hides in his ruff and does not matt his fur. Yet, because its a martingale makes it impossible to slip his collar. The company I used no longer is actively in business, but if you can find a similar product, that would be my recommendation.

also maybe think of trying a harness... A front clip harness not a regular one, they tend to come in a lot of sizes and are adjustable. It is very easy to adjust and pups don't learn to pull this way.

Why do you recommend a harness now? Just curious. I generally only recommend harnesses if dogs have a tendency to pull on their leashes - and then generally, my preferred choice is the Easy Walk.
