What do you call this command?

I am looking through the rally obedience exercises and I need to teach Ellie how to do certain things, but I don't know what command to call for some things.

Just an FYI that I say "Let's go" to move her forward, not "Heel." I reserved "heel" for when she is sitting in front of me and I want her to turn in a tight circle to my left and get into the heel position. She does this FABULOUS!

I need to teach her how to (from sitting in front of me facing me) to walk past my right, behind me and come up to the heeling position on my left. What do y'all call this command?

There is also the exercise of having her sitting in front of me and taking one step back, then two steps back and three steps back., with her taking the steps with me but then sitting down facing me when I stop. I hesitate to say "Let's go" from that position because I certainly think tht would confuse her. What command do you say for that? Do you think "step" would work? Or maybe "forward?" I know a lot of people use "forward" for other things like walking forward at a heel, but I don't use that. Paula (Ellie's trainer) used "let's go" for walkng in a heeling position and we have re-enforced that for a year, so that has to stay the same.

Thanks for helping the new (old) kid!

I say go around. To the left from front is get back. To be honest though, mine reads the hand signal for it better than the command
With the call front, one step back, two steps back, three steps back, it's just 'okay'. Okay for mine means they are being released from a sit, and they are to do whatever I direct them to do from there. If I move back, my dog is to come forward. If we stop, she is to sit.

This sounds like a Right Finish; I'm actually trying to teach this to Edan because I'd like to start learning Rally with him and he doesn't know his finishes.

I'm using the command "Around" and a hand motion with my right hand making an arc from about the middle of my front to my back.

I saw this sign at a demo we did a few weeks ago. I'm not sure how I'm going to train this one yet so I can't really help much here.

For the right finish (dog passes behind your back to heel position and sits), I just say "around", but like HopeSheltie's dogs, Phebe keys off my hand motion as much or more than the voice command. (I've tested this by only using one or the other and her response is a hair quicker with the hand signal than the verbal command.)

For the 1-2-3 back sign, I just say 'watch' with my hands together at my waist as I take the first backward step. Phebe has always just followed me, stopped when I stopped and sat. LOL Well, maybe I had to remind her to sit when we were first learning it, but she caught on quickly and stays close through the entire exercise.

The trick for us is to change up how many steps I take and in what order when practicing, so that she doesn't anticipate and try to finish the entire exercise on her own. Sometimes I just take three steps back and tell her to 'swing' (our command for the left finish). Sometimes I take 2 steps, then 1, and tell her 'swing'. The important thing is that she's doing the finish when I tell her and not when she thinks the exercise is done.

I haven't bothered to use a word for moving forward in the heel position yet. I just use 'watch'. I'll probably be changing that soon since we've started competition obedience work. One my of the instructors uses 'strut'. I like that. :biggrin2:

I use around for the right finish. I say heel for the left finish and for heeling. Heel to my dogs means go to my left side and stay there be until told to do something else and that applies to if I'm moving or standing still.

For the 1 step2 step back etc. I say "front" That means to my dogs come and sit straight in front of me. Again whether'I'm moving or not. As soon as I stop moving they should be in front of me sitting.

I don't use forward for anything. In obedience, that's the judge's command to start heeling. Trust me Shelties learn quick enough to go on the judges commands no need to teach them to do it. :smile2:

We use "around" too.

I love hearing how different people use different commands. One of the girls in my glass says "flip" for left finish and then "finish" for right finish. I really liked the flip comand, its something you don't hear too often. I say heel.

For the 1 step2 step back etc. I say "front" That means to my dogs come and sit straight in front of me. Again whether'I'm moving or not. As soon as I stop moving they should be in front of me sitting.
I use "come front" it was just 'come', but just about everyone in my class says "front", and I somehow picked that up somewhere along the way  I didn't notice it until it was pointed out to me, though.

These are the commands I use:

"Around" - Right Finish
"Heel" - Left Finish
"Front" - Front (from heel position and for the 3 steps back as well.)
"With Me" - To return to heel position if she is lagging behind me.

Around to the right, I say "Flip!"

Around to the left, I say "Loop."

I use "Front" for the on, two and three steps back. For us, "Front" means sit facing me as close to my feet as possible without crowding me.
