What do you feed

I am just starting to homecook for my shelties. For those who cook for their dogs, what supplements do you recommend?

i use natural balance . limited ingredients diets. all grain free and very good food at a moderate price. i use lamb and rice, sweet potato and fish or sweet potato and chicken.

Most everyone knows that I home cook for my dogs. It's actually more inexpensive to do that than buy the holistic dog food. However when I cook for them I know exactly what quality of food they are eating and I can adjust the amounts to benefit each dog individually.

Their diet consists of chicken breast or chicken liver, salmon, green vegetables, fruit, oatmeal and eggs along with a complete supplement.

Hugs

The breeder used Diamond something, but I bought Wellness puppy. Ariel LOVES the wellness, but at dinner I add what I'm eating, which is always healthy like chicken, chicken livers, salmon, fresh veggies, rice.

The diet you feed your dogs sounds like what I eat. Do you mind sharing your recipes or direct me to the website you follow? Thanks!

When Lexi was younger, I started with science diet, and then I found out she had some allergies to chicken and corn. So then I went with nutro, but my vet recommended Kirkland's Lame and Rice formula (from Costco). Originally, I was skeptical, but after a few months on Kirkland's, I saw major improvements in her coat and teeth. My vet said her teeth look wonderful, so that I am pleased with. If you are looking for a low cost dog food, a 40 lb bag is 23 dollars and change. I wasn't opposed t spending more for dog food because I want my dog to be healthy, but she LOVES this dog food! So for now this is what we're sticking to. Here is the ingredient list :

Lamb, Lamb meal, whole grain brown rice, rice flour, white rice, egg product, cracked pearled barley, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocoperols and Vitamin E), beet pulp, potatoes, fishmeal, flaxseed, natural flavor, millet, brewers dried yeast, carrots, peas, choline chloride, rosemary extract, parsley flake, dried chicory root, glucosamine hydrochloride, taurine, vitamin E supplement, iron proteinate, copper proteninate, ferrous sulfate, zinc sulfate, copper sulfate, potassium iodide, thiamine mononitrate, manganese proteniate, manganese oxide, manganese sulfate, sodium selenite, pridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), Vitamin B12 supplement, menadione sodium bisulfate (source of vitamin K activity), riboflavin, vitamin D supplement, folic acid

This is a little OT but if you are like me and like cooking for your fur kids, this recipe was developed by the Head of Animal Sciences at the Uni of Sydney for people who like to cook and what to ensure a balanced meal and it can be frozen in bulk.

550 g boiled potato
350 g lean meat (lightly stewed)
80 g cooked human-grade sheep or beef liver*
20 g corn oil
20 g bone meal**
5 g table salt
* A vitamin supplement can be used instead of the liver
**Bone meal can be found in certain healthfood stores and is an excellent source of calcium.

Amount to feed each day according to body weight:
Dog weight Food
5 kg 270 g
10 kg 460 g
15 kg 620 g
20 kg 770 g

You can turn it into a stew by adding tomato paste & water, and sometimes yoghurt for variety. Plus I swap vegies around - not sure if you are meant to but my dogs love their brocoli, cauliflower and pumpkin.

I was feeding Blue Buffalo Lamb & Brown Rice until the price went up. I switched to Nature's Recipe Lamb/Brown Rice, but I know it's not that great of a food so I decided to check out what I could get at our local feed store and they can get Taste of the Wild for me. I ordered the Pacific Stream formula and will be starting it either today or tomorrow. I can't WAIT! I did try samples of all three formulas and one of them gave Lilly diarrhea and another gave Blaze diarrhea (although they both LOVED each formula) so Pacific Stream seems to be the best one.

I just switched my dog over to Natural Balance Sweet Potatoe and Duck. Is this an OK choice? Or am I better off with Eagle Pack, Wellness, etc.?

Wellness. Fish in a can by Wellness, or Taste of the Wild Salmon, just to get their Omegas in. The fish is used as a treat only, and not everyday.

Check out these websites. We've all got our opinions, good or bad. Only you can make the final analysis.

I will say that the same principles apply to dogs as do humans. Garbage in, garbage out. If you worry about sodium and fillers, etc. in your diet., you should worry about the same in your pups.

I feed Diamond Naturals chicken and rice.
Its not the best of the best by no means, but it IS a good food. I can actually afford it too

They get canned Blue Buffalo in their dry food most of the time
