What is the best type of fish to feed for Omega 3's?

Justicemom....Whatever!

Why are you beating me on this? I'm just presenting other options here. I never pretended to be an expert on raw, just saying what I do understand to be options.

I feed raw, and for omegas, I feed an oily fish. I buy canned mackerel, and they each get a mackerel each twice a week. They are all really fond of the mackerel, and I've never had any trouble getting them to eat it.

I would be careful, that's quite a bit; twice a week. Mackerel is on the medium level for mercury so if you want to continue to feed it that much I'd feed something on the lowest level of concern.

Well, I will dare make another comment....but since I'm no a raw feeder, I might get shot down again.

No matter which raw you choose to feed, its easy to supplement the fish oils. Just buy a supplement and squirt onto the food. Whatever food you choose.

You do not need to go fish based solely in your raw food choices. Suplementation is an option.

Ok, ducking now from the Raw Food Police! :hide

Barb, perhaps since as you admit you are not an expert on raw (nor am I, so I don't comment on these threads) it should be left to those who are and know what supplementation and foods are needed, like Dr. Shelli who is a vet. Not every nutritional issue can be answered with a squirt of something purchased in a store.

If only life worked where could just "squirt something into the food" and get the same benefits.

The majority of them have soy in them (mixed tocopherols=soy a lot of the time) it can actually cause quite a bit of issues doing what you're suggesting as a lot of dogs don't handle soy too well.

I don't do raw. My favorite is salmon. I buy salmon kibbles, and I bake salmon for all of us. Fur babies love it.

Off the subject when its only for the family: Soak that salmon for 8 hours in Bourbon and brown sugar, just make like a soupy mix, place in a bag.

On the subject never gave this a try but sardines are suppose to be a great
Omega. Another that was mentioned (great idea too) Mackeral.

Taking a deep cleansing breath here.....the original question was about raw, yes...but specifically wanting to know about ensuring omega fish was in the diet. I only supplied a non-raw but perfectly acceptable supplement to provide the omegas. Whether you feed raw or kibble. You can use this supplement.

Ann, are you suggesting that no one but "professionals" should comment on dog food questions? If you are, and that it what you implied, than this category of the forum will be virtually shut down since we only have a few vets on the forum currently.

And a final comment. My vet told me point blank that she is not a nutritionist and doesn't pretend to be one. But she knows enough to ask the questions and make a referral if necessary.

That's not to say that Dr. Shelli is not qualified....but just because you have a vet degree does not make you a specialist in nutirition. I would argue that there are probably dozens of people of this forum who have as good or better understanding of nutrition than a vet.

Dr. Shelli.....this is not a slur against you. Just that your name was brought up specifically :hide

And that folks is why we updated our terms of service to include a disclaimer to everyone to be careful of armchair veterinary advice read on the forums!

As Ann said, it is best to leave the raw discussions to the people who know it best and feed raw. As far as I know Barb, that does not include any expertise by you. However, including your OPINION for salmon oil into the conversation would have been just fine. But that is not the root issue here.

Inserting yourself aggressively into discussions you know nothing about and insulting our member veterinarians is plain rude. Not that any other member isn't entitled to courtesy in any other thread, but when you think you know better than a vet and post it publicly, well, that is a problem. If this was an isolated incident, moderators could post a "let's get back on track" statement. Unfortunately, it's an established pattern of behavior that needs to stop.

So for everyone who reads this, FYI: whenever a moderator steps into a conversation and talks to you (public or private), do not ignore it or have a snotty retort. It is time for you to take a step back and humbly look at yourself. Moderators do not have an agenda nor are they out to get any member. They are here to enforce the rules and we are the last word. Publicly undermining any one of the moderator's authority isn't going to fly.

End of speech by me but not the end of the topic of the thread. I hope the conversation will continue and we won't close it unless it gets off track. Moderators will delete any further public conversation of anything off topic in this thread or if the discussion gets too heated. So please play nice! :wink2:
