When did you ease up on crate training?

I had a hard time trying to decide which route I wanted to take. Ella has been crate trained since day one, and she is really good in it, but I wanted to give her freedom.

So, we ran an experiment (it's the PhD in my fiancee and I). I set up my video camera to tape for 10 minutes after we left the house to see what she would do, same times, same leaving circumstances, and same setup.

In her crate, she only barks if we leave the house at abnormal times. But, if it is in the AM, PM when I have class, and at night when I coach, she is fine. She did her 5 barks to say goodbye, and ate her treat, chewed her ice cube, chewed on her toy, and fell asleep.

We did the same when she was left out, and she went crazy go nuts, barking a ton, whining and crying like I've never heard. She started to chew on things that she's never chewed before. And we've left her out for a few times before, so it wasn't the first time.

IMO, the crate is safer for her, she sleeps anyway, and she will not bite anything that may cause her harm (cause just one little thing on the floor could hurt them).

I know when I come home, my puppers is safe.
