When do shelties get fluffy coats?

hello there. I have got a sheltie(Jacky) and he's 4yrs old. Recently we had to go overseas for a while and we sent him to pet hotel which is the same co. in which we bought him from. We were hoping that they wld care for him like their own since he was from there . Unfortunately, He came home very depressed with bruises ard his neck and very badly matted all over.
We had no choice but shave him down to very little fur. I know it is not a good thing to shave a sheltie but we had no choice. Its been about three months now and his under coat is somewhat back. But we are concerned about the growth of his top coat. We never really had the chance to see his top coat grow till now. Do you think its because of the of the climate? Cos we're from Singapore and its pretty equatorial climate. Or has anything to do with shaving? We would like to make sure that he is properly taken care of now. Is there anything you guys can reccomend to encourage the growth of Jacky's top coat?

Hi, welcome to the group! That is too bad that the pet hotel didn't take care of Jacky the way you thought they would. Usually with shaving a sheltie it takes a while for their coat to grow back in, I think over a year. Jacky is pretty though!
 
My pup is just a hair over 14 months now and is just starting to get her big girl fur in.. Up until about 3 months ago she was all legs! Her chest and neck area are really starting to fill in fast.. Her butt has been pretty fluffy since she was a pup but I have to keep it all trimmed down pretty sure because it gets stinky fast!
 
I'm also sorry about Jacky. He'll get "Sheltified" again, but it does take time. I recommend fish oil capsules and gentle brushing with a natural bristle brush to stimulate the circulation.

Poor Jacky, but at least he's back with you and he'll never have to go back there again.

Don't worry, his coat will come back eventually. Chris' idea of fish oil and special brushing will definitely help.
 
Bloomshaz, no it's not the climate. The top coat will grow out even in our horrible hot and humid weather! (I'm from SG too) The coat may not be as beautiful pre-shaving (shaving really alters the coat) but it'll show itself soon enough! I had a Sheltie before who was shaved to our horror by a stupid groomer. I've got a pup now who's on the Missing Link and Solid Gold Sea Meal, both of which have helped (esp Solid Gold) his fur grow out nice and soft and fluffy.
