When will he have his 'full' coat?

Merlin is now 16 months and hasn't blown his coat in a while, so I am expecting it soon.

My breeder said his sister is just going through a major moult and losing her junior coat.

So I was wondering if I should be expecting Merlin to get fluffier after his next moult? When are male shelties considered to have their full adult coat?

usually shelties dont get thier full coats until they are around 3 my sheltie didnt get his til he was right around 5 then bam did he get it lol. He is so thick.

It depends on the lines when the full coat comes in. Emma now at about 2.5 has a nice heavy coat, really thick. Liam is three months younger and has a finer coat. I don't think he will ever get a heavy coat. Now Natalie at 11 months has a very heavy coat already. I hate to think what it will be like if this is just a puppy coat and she gets an even heavier coat. I believe my Noah had his adult coat around 2-3 years.

Thank you, so I can expect him to get fluffier yet! He has fluffed up since his birthday, people thought he had grown again, but it is really all coat.

Indy and Bacca are both 4.

I'm still waiting for Bacca's full coat but expect that he would have it by now if it wasn't for a few unfortunate grooming experiences.

Indy will never have a long sweeping coat. He will always be just poofyand somewhat short haired.
!
I still hope that Bacca will eventually have the long fur that his breeding promises.

Either way, doesn't matter! don't show or do agility or anything. They are simply my boys. The only thing I get anal about these days is their nails

(which reminds me, Bacca needs a trim!)

Lol, well said Barb! At the end of the day Merlin is a decided scruff-pup and always will be. He wants to be out in the mud, herding sheep or running around, who cares about being neat and tidy? lol!

He also has this weird kink to the fur on his upper back, it grows long and then kinks out at an angle:lol: Have no idea if that will ever grow out!
