When will I learn!

I have found it hard to find a groomer who knows how to do a sheltie properly...it seeems no matter what you instruct, they all come back with their feathers cut off and not groomed properly...you know their fur will grow back, but its just so aggravating.....I just do it myself now...this site has taught me alot of grooming tips...one of mine needs alot of attention as she has fur that just seems to grow nonstop, one needs mostly just brushing and he does fine with that, the third somewhat inbetween.....I would love to find a good groomer, but my exerience has taught me otherwise....

Posts like this scare me! I had Greyson groomed when I first got him (which I posted about), and they didn't listen to my directions either.

Poor Indy, it will grow back :(

If anyone in Connecticut has any groomer recommendations, I'm all ears!

Oh yikes! Poor Indy and Bacca.

Ever since we took my Yorkie (family dog from years ago) to a "referred" groomer, who proceeded to shave him completely and the poor boy had nicks all over his scrotum, I can't take my dogs to the groomer. I do it all myself. I don't care if they look silly, at least I know I won't be doing anything crazy.

Oh man. I hope when you get your shop and a groomer, NOTHING like this will ever happen. I say, lose the groomer's number and never ever go back. Obviously, they don't understand what you want.

Sorry the groomer got carried away Barb. It's a horrible feeling when you see they've botched the job. I just can't get myself to trust a groomer with my Shelties. I'm even more distrustful now since the fiasco this spring with Toby my Pom and the groomer.

I thought I'd made myself clear that the plan was to shorten and thin his coat just a little bit for summer. Apparently I didn't make it clear enough for her. I was horrified when she brought him out. She'd shaved everything but his head and tail and he looked ridiculous. His coat is finally getting better but is still not even close to normal. I just hope it's not ruined forever. I don't think I'll be trusting Toby to another groomer anytime soon.

Here's poor, naked Toby.

Unless it was deemed nessassary,if a person brought my pom out ot me like that I would literally smack the witch. Honestly the women does not even own the right to have grooming scissors. Lord, that poor dog Sue.

I've had 2 bad grooming experiences. Once I asked for no trimming and they trimmed poor Bentley everywhere. He looked terrible. I cried when my husband brought him home (I contend that Bentley's fur still hasn't recovered!) and the second time we took him somewhere he got fleas.

So, I sucked it up and now I groom both dogs myself. Yes, it's a pain, but it's a lot cheaper, and I know that I'm not cutting more than I should! I wish I knew some sheltie breeders around here, but I don't.

Mikos only got groomed once and that was by a sheltie breeder so he looked fabulous, and she let me stay and watch so that she could explain how to do everything. So now I am the groomer for Mikos and Brie and while it is not always the best job, at least we have not suffered hack jobs. Our little maltese X goes to the groomer but we have been lucky there.

Yep, an hour drive is a small price to pay. Trust me. No one grooms like a Sheltie person, even if you stand there and watch them. Sorry to hear the boys got sheared.

Well, an hour out of town turns into an entire day...An hour drive, 3-4 hours grooming (and what do you do for that 3 to 4 hours?), and an hour back. So you can see how tempting it is to just go to your local groomer

It's my own damned fault really!

I already groom my boys myself, but when I know that its getting close to bath time, I get lazy and let things slide a little. And even though I told her not to razor, it wasn't enough for her to stop with the scissors.

Aargh! If my pet store ever works out, it has grooming facilities. I will hire a groomer that actually listens to its clients.

Hear, hear! I can never get stylists to do what I want with my hair, so I've pretty much given up. I think that part of training to become a stylist is learning to appear very attentive to the client and then just do whatever the heck you want to their hair anyway. Here's hoping that is not also part of the curriculum to become a groomer!

One of the girls who works at our local pet store salon apparently has some personal experience with Shelties, we discovered. The last time we brought Lerwick in for grooming (he is still a puppy so is only getting a bath and nail trimming now), she commented that her family used to breed Shelties. I did not ask if she therefore knows how to properly groom a Sheltie (didn't want to offend the woman who had just groomed Lerwick), but once Lerwick gets his adult coat, I'll see if it's possible to schedule him with her. I am ok with bathing and brushing (and trimming nails and grinch feet), but if he were to require anything more involved than that, I don't think I'd be up to the challenge, so I really hope to find somebody who will do a decent job.
